Comments from participants:

A 1st year student of the Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering and Master's Degree in Environment and Energy Transition at Comillas Pontifical University tells us about...

"During a normal day, after breakfast we would teach the students from 8 to 11 a.m., then we would help with other organizational tasks until lunchtime. Then at 3 to 6:30 p.m. the next shift of classes would begin. And classes were given to the students who had classes in the school in the morning and reinforcement in the afternoon, as opposed to the morning. When the classes were over, we rested and had dinner.

I was also lucky enough to spend two weekends at the home of one of the girls from the association, I got to know her family, her customs, her house... This was what really made me discover the reality of the country and I enjoyed it and lived it to the fullest. It is an unforgettable, unique and shocking experience. It helps you to discover another face of the world and allows you to soak up its culture, customs and way of seeing life. It is an experience that changes you completely."

Project and activity identification:

We are a non-profit association that supports excluded young women from the different municipalities of the department of Huehuetenango with scholarships. To finance ourselves we have a building that we rent: comfortable rooms, showroom, food service, computer room, library and parking.

What are we going to do?

Support in the day-to-day tasks of the residence: tutoring classes for undergraduate students, space maintenance tasks, administrative tasks for housing management. Among others.

- Reinforcement classes for undergraduate students (reading, reading comprehension, calculus,...).

- Preparing a workshop on self-knowledge and self-esteem, from a perspective of psychological care (to be agreed with the Ixmucané team).

- General maintenance of Ixmucané: painting, gardening, care of the animals in Ixmucané.

- Home visits to follow up on the resident scholarship students in their family environment (together with the Ixmucané team).

With the work done by the students we hope to achieve a better attention to the residents and increase the income of the association.

Candidates must keep in mind that they will be joining an organization and a space where young people from rural areas live in a safe and peaceful environment. Volunteers must be able to adapt to the organization's schedule and be responsible, as role models and examples for them.

From previous experiences with volunteers, it is important that the newcomers understand that they are not just in a hostel.

Activity schedule: from 8:00 to 16:00. Occasionally, support for organizational tasks may be required on weekends.

Description of the beneficiaries:

Young girls from different rural municipalities in the department of Huehuetenango.

Previous training:

All students selected for the VUELA program will receive common training for participation in volunteer activities.

Consult YOUR UNIVERSITY at the following links to learn more about the dates, location and conditions of the training.  Don't forget to write them down in your calendar. This training is mandatory and is part of the project.

Field support:

The field accompaniment will be carried out by the organization itself throughout the project, as well as by a person from the convening universities who will accompany the experience in the field.

Lodging and meals:

The organization offers lodging and meals in its own facilities. The cost includes lodging and three meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at a cost of $20 per day per person (starting the day of arrival at Ixmucané and until the day of departure). Ixmucané will pick up people arriving from Guatemala City at the Pullmantur Los Halcones station (Huehuetenango).

Please note that the food is the same as for the team and resident students: basic healthy menu, with animal protein on Sunday. The organization cannot ensure the provision of differentiated food taking into account intolerances, although every effort will be made to accommodate this. The exact amounts in euros will be communicated prior to arrival, as well as the method of payment.

Information on the possibility and conditions of financial support for these concepts can be found below, by consulting YOUR UNIVERSITY:
