Common Q&A:
How many students will be in each class?
Between 15-25, depending on enrollment.
When will teachers know which students are in their class?
Final rosters will be ready for team review at the Summer Program Team Meeting, date TBD - week of June 23rd, 10:00-3:00 PM.
Will students with IEPs receive support from a special education teacher?
Yes, the timing of that support will be planned into the final schedule; it may look like push-in, pull-out, or a combination thereof.
Will there be paraprofessional support in early elementary classrooms?
A paraprofessional will be assigned to the classrooms with the youngest enrolled learners.
Can I teach in my current classroom?
We won't know this answer until class lists are finalized. This decision will be based on the total number of students who enroll, the class groupings we create, which classrooms need the most cleaning/janitorial/repair services over the summer, etc. A day will be provided during the week of June 24th for teachers to prepare the classroom space they will be working from during Summer Program.
I want to teach students from my current class during Summer Program; can this be arranged?
We won't know this answer until the application window has closed and until early June when most students have enrolled. While we will certainly consider this desire, you shouldn't apply if this is a make-or-break condition for you. We have to consider the best interests of all students when making final classroom placement decisions.
What are student attendance expectations?
We want our students present as much as possible in order to benefit from the program! That said, we do not exclude students for missing Summer Program days. Teachers should reach out to students when they miss days to encourage them to come and request support from the Site Coordinator and Assistant Site Coordinator to help address barriers students may be experiencing that interrupt their attendance. Students who meet our 80% attendance goal earn an incentive trip on the final day, August 8th!
What are student behavioral expectations?
The same behavioral expectations are in place as during the school year; we follow our Community Expectations of 'Take Care of Myself, Take Care of Others, Take Care of My Space."
Teachers follow the Consequence Continuum:
Positive Narration Around Student
Direct Reminder/Correction
Stay in the Game Conversation
Out of Class Support from Behavior Interventionist or Lead Administrator followed by a Restorative Conversation to Re-enter the Classroom
Actions that bypass this Continuum:
Putting the physical or mental well-being of self, others, or adults at risk
These situations will be addressed on a case-by-case basis and could result in permanent removal from Summer Program
Are field trips included for students?
There are no Field Lessons (trips connected to in-class learning) during Summer Program. There is an end-of-program Attendance Incentive Trip on August 8th (AM portion of the day) for students who have met the attendance goal of 80% attendance.
Why do all teachers have to use the same curriculum?
Quality, continuity of learning between classrooms and grade levels and connections to specific grade-level learning during the school year. It also provides a common language for all teachers and allows for very intentional instructional support from Lavinia content experts and the school Summer Program Lead. We continue to make strong investments in the Lavinia RISE program because of its high-quality lessons centered around rigorous, engaging, culturally responsive texts and tasks, developed by leading content experts. This means teachers don't have to spend time on what to teach, but on preparing themselves for how.
Do teachers have to create lesson plans?
Lavinia will provide all lesson plans for Instruction; teachers will need to engage in intellectual preparation ahead of lessons by reviewing materials, reading students' literature, grading students' work and providing feedback, etc.
Do students take assessments?
Yes; there is a pre-assessment and post-assessment for reading and for math so that we can determine how impactful summer instruction was for each student and be able to share that Information with students and their families.
Will teachers participate in coaching the same way as during the school year?
There are two types of coaching support that teachers will participate in this summer:
Content coaching provided by Lavinia content experts. This will happen in twice-weekly one-hour meetings during which groups of teachers from across the country teaching the same content will meet virtually to review lessons and student work and prepare for upcoming instruction.
Instructional strategy coaching is provided by a CEN coach. We expect all teachers to utilize the same strategies during summer as we use during the school year (precise directions, positive narration, focused instruction, etc.). Teachers should expect a CEN coach to conduct regular observations and feedback cycles. This can be up to 1 hour of weekly instructional strategy coaching, which will be scheduled between the coach and teacher based on need. Teachers can request additional coaching / academic support meetings as needed.
Do teachers provide student supplies?
No! Classroom/student supplies needed to provide instruction will be given to each teacher during the Summer Program Team Meeting - date TBD, week of June 23rd. The school provides all supplies - teachers/students are NOT asked to contribute. If a teacher individually decides to purchase materials that are beyond what is determined to be needed for instruction, those costs are the responsibility of the teacher. The Summer Program Lead is responsible for the purchase and distribution of materials.
