Level up on Every Test-KJTMA Annual STAAR Rap
A key to our success is CELEBRATION! At KJTMA, we celebrate our Resilience, Integrity, Scholarship, and determination to Empower Students! Each year, we create an annual STAAR rap that we listen to each morning during Eagle Academy. Join in on the celebration, and please play this for your students in the car. The STAAR should not be a source of stress for students! It is an opportunity for them to demonstrate EVERYTHING that they learned to do over the years in school and at home! Let's challenge and help our students "level up" their mindsets about the STAAR!!
3rd-5th Grade math tutoring
We are rocking and rolling academically as a school. However, we must lean into Math in 3rd-5th grade to ensure our students perform at their highest levels. We did not have teachers in these areas at the beginning of the year. So, as a school, we are not letting that become an excuse. Our entire faculty will be tutoring. We will offer 3rd- 5th grade tutoring on Mondays in April before the STAAR assessment. (April 8, 15, & 22, 2024). Please sign your students up by March 26, 2024, so that we can count how many students we are serving during tutoring! We also plan on serving our students on two Saturdays.
We need your help at home as well! You can also work on the standards at home. Below, I've included a calendar of the standards we are working on and a link to a statewide math website to help you help your students with the standards at home. You can plug the standard into the search bar at the top of the website, and it will explain the standard to you. You can also use games and practice problems to help your students.

bootcamp is underway-We need your help
This week, we started Bootcamp in 3rd-8th grade! Bootcamp allows us to go deeper into the curriculum students learned at the beginning of the school year! We are fine-tuning our understanding of the curriculum and gaining a deeper perspective on things that we learned previously. This is the part of the year when the dots begin to connect for students and when lightbulbs come on! I am so excited for our students!!!!! We need your help:
Focus: During the spring semester, students tend to be less focused and more inclined to engage in behavior that can be distracting to themselves and others. Please talk with your students about focus and acting with integrity! Please remind them that there is a perfect time to play and an ideal time to focus. During our class, we need to be highly focused.
Personal Technology: Additionally, there has been an increase in the number of students bringing technology from home to school. When students bring their technology, they can access social media such as Discord and Instagram. With these social media interruptions, our students can become holistically distracted. Please ensure your student leaves iPads, Smart Watches, Earbuds, and Laptops at home. Our campus is 1:1 for technology: Every child has access to a device they can use during instruction in every classroom. We have a device for your student to use during class.
Selling Snacks: No student is allowed to sell snacks to peers. Please make sure that your students are not selling snacks during school. This is a huge liability. Many students have food allergies that they do not always share. When students sell snacks, they put their peers at risk. Any student who sells snacks to their peers will be held to the consequences listed in the Student Code of Conduct.
Thank you for helping us make the end of the year successful for our students!

Volunteer of the Week, Mr. Tyson
Mr. Entuane Tyson, the father of two KJTMA students (Daniel and Timothy), is our volunteer for the week! Mr. Tyson is our campus coordinator for ALL PRO DADs! Not only does Mr. Tyson lead ALL PRO DADs on our campus, but he also attends every parent PLC and gets involved in everything from the Science Fair to the district college and career fair. When I asked Mr. Tyson a couple of questions about his volunteerism, this is what he shared with me:
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer because I believe it’s important for all to do our part to support our kids’ education, growth, and development. As a parent and community member, I recognize that volunteering in our schools provides much needed support to supplement the hard work that teachers and administrators do to educate our kids.
What do you get out of volunteering?
I enjoy volunteering because I get to directly impact important areas in my community, such as education, while also giving back to mentor and inspire others around me.
What encouragement would you give to a parent to help them get involved in volunteering at KJ? I would encourage parents to volunteer for three main reasons. First, it sets a good example for our kids on the value of service and giving back. Second, it gives us an opportunity to see first-hand the many great things going on at the schools and the work required to make those things successful. Third, it gives us a perspective on the many areas of opportunity in which we can improve and make our schools even better.
Why is the dad’s club important? The All Pro Dad chapter at KJ is important because of the need of men and male mentors to be a positive influence on our kids’ lives. As dads, we have a unique ability to inspire and encourage our children, and All Pro Dad provides great tools and resources for us to accomplish those goals.
Mr. Tyson, we thank you for your service and celebrate you as our KJTMA volunteer of the week!

Women's History MOnth
During Eagle Academy last week, we studied women activists. We specifically looked at the lives of Malala, Jane Elliot, Delores Huerta, and Yuri K. As we learned about the lives of each lady, our 6th-8th grade students had the opportunity to create a Diamante poem. Our study of Women Activists was riveting! This week, we will explore Women who overcame the odds. We are fortunate that Cierra Washington, a DeSoto ISD grad who became a pilot, will speak to our students!

DeSoto ISD Standardized Dress
![](https://www.google.com/images/icons/product/drive-32.png)
KJTMA Standardized Dress Expectations & Consessions
Some of our students are wearing colors outside the colors prescribed in the district dresscode. The dress code colors are as follows: Solid color green, gold, black, white, or gray shirt with collar;
Thank you for helping us adhere to the standardized dress expectations this week! Students will be in Standardized Dress UNLESS we send a notice home to parents on Thursday. Every Friday, students may wear their House t-shirt or DeSoto spirit shirt with the uniform bottoms or dark colored jeans (black, gray, or dark blue without rips).
Dress down days will be announced through phone messages on Thursdays. If a small group of students earn an extended dress-down period, that information will be shared directly with the student and parents. An example of an extended dress down might look like students getting honored through the PBIS system would have several days to dress down in a row.
All KJTMA students are expected to adhere to the district guidelines for standardized dress. KJTMA students are also expected to have a KJ patch added to the left side of their shirt. Patches can be purchased individually in the school office or through the online KJTMA Uniform Store. Students must wear shirts with patches Monday-Thursday. Spirit shirts are only worn on Fridays.
Patches Available in the office
Because the patches were on back order, we understand that all students may not have patches on every shirt just yet. However, we will keep you informed as to when we will strictly enforce the dress expectations. Our addition of the patches to the KJTMA uniform is for safety purposes. Because of the patches, not only will our students be identifiable as they travel throughout the district, anyone who is not a part of our campus will be identifiable in our school. Without exception, the standardized dress policy will be fully enforced as it helps us ensure the safety of all students.
Middle School Badges
Badges are a part of standardized dress expectations. All middle school students must wear their badges at all times. Students who are in athletics at McCowan must wear their badges while at the other campus. Middle school students also need their badges to enter all DeSoto ISD games. Replacement badges are $5.00. Students who do not have their badges will be charged $1.00 for temporary badges.
The standardized dress policy will be fully enforced as it helps us ensure the safety of all students in the building.
Expectativas y concesiones de vestimenta estandarizadas de KJTMA
Algunos de nuestros estudiantes visten colores distintos a los prescritos en el código de vestimenta del distrito. Los colores del código de vestimenta son los siguientes: Camisa con cuello de color sólido verde, dorado, negro, blanco o gris;

4. ¡Les encantarán tus sonrisas! :)

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Cold and Flu Season Precautionary Measures
Posted on 10/27/2022
Health officials are reporting concerns related to the spread of RSV, cold and flu, and coronavirus as the winter months approach. Help reduce the potential spread of these health concerns as we work closely with the Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services to monitor trends related to such illnesses in the community.
RSV, cold and flu, and coronavirus can spread easily from person to person, and we need the assistance of staff and parents to help reduce this possible spread. It is important to take the following precautions to help ensure the health of our community:
Check for signs of illness every morning. (i.e., Fatigue, fever, sweating, cough, sore throat, headache.)
Do not come to school or work if sick. Symptoms usually include fever, cough or sore throat, and sometimes runny nose, body aches, headache, vomiting, or diarrhea. Those with symptoms should not return to school or work until they no longer have a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications or in the case of coronavirus, have tested negative.
Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or regular use of hand sanitizer is one of the most important steps you can take to stay healthy. Continue to teach children to cover their cough with their elbow or sleeve, and to wash their hands before and after touching their face.
Utilize appropriate cough and sneeze etiquette by coughing into the upper sleeve or using tissue and disposing of it properly.
Consider the use of masks. While DeSoto ISD no longer enforces a mask mandate, health officials encourage continued use of masks during the heightened cold and flu season.
Practice social distancing when possible in high-capacity indoor spaces and gatherings.
Consider a flu shot and/or COVID vaccine or booster to be proactive in protecting one’s health. Also consider the addition of recommended vitamins like C, D, Zinc, and Elderberry to assist in supporting immune health.
Re: Students: Please notify the school if your child is absent by 10 am on the day of the absence, and share your child’s symptoms with the school.
Re: Staff: Please notify your supervisor of the concern and potential absence as soon as possible and enter any necessary time off in the appropriate system. Please note, DeSoto ISD no longer provides COVID leave. Leave for COVID or other health-related concerns will be attributed to employees’ personal time off.
Dallas County Health officials recommend the following additional precautions:
Recognize whether you or any household member is at high risk for severe illness from RSV. cold and flu, or coronavirus. People at higher risk for complications include children under the age of five years, pregnant women, people of any age who have chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, or heart disease), and people aged 65 years and older. If any high-risk person or their household members become sick with flu-like symptoms, please contact your doctor as soon as possible to ask for advice about antiviral medications.
Get all healthy household members vaccinated.
It is important to note that DeSoto ISD has trained medical staff at each campus with protocols in place to handle communicable illnesses common to school districts like influenza (flu), pertussis (whooping cough), strep throat, head lice, and more.
Additionally, DeSoto ISD has a standard practice of maintaining a clean school environment. As is customary in school districts during flu season and as has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, we make it a point to frequently clean and sanitize our schools and classrooms regularly throughout the school day and each night during routine cleaning practices.
Student and staff safety is our top priority. We will continue to monitor the CDC and DSHS for additional information and guidance and will share information with you regarding any updates.

There's been a lack of communication about upcoming assignments. On a couple of occasions this school year, my student has had to work on projects last minute because there was not much notice given.
Please accept my sincerest apology for your experience. When this happens, please let the teacher know, and please inform the campus. Also, how much advance notice would be ideal for you and your family to help your student complete assignments and projects adequately? I am confident that we can make a beneficial adjustment of time with projects that we are sharing!-Dr. Neely
Neely

lost and found
Our Lost and Found is overflowing with coats, sweaters, clothes, and lunch boxes. Please take a moment and stop by the school to check for items if your scholar has misplaced any items.
We have gone through looking for names so that we can return them, but unfortunately, there were only a few items that had names on them.
Nuestro Lost and Found está repleto de abrigos, suéteres, ropa y loncheras.
