This week was robust and meaningful in so many ways. The extra experiences are important for our students because learning and mastering the curriculum is a basic necessity for school. However, scholarship is rooted in experience. True scholarship is robust and experiential and requires that we take bold steps to ensure our students get lost in the love of learning! There is a culture of experiential learning in DeSoto ISD and at KJTMA. Thank you for choosing us, and for showing up to or volunteering for all of the events above! YOU ARE AWESOME!

kjtma named dr. jay cummings demonstration school for the 2024 tabse conference
One of our awesome parents nominated our school to be considered as a Texas Association of Black School Educators (TABSE) Demonstration school. Demonstration schools are those that have high outcomes and a majority-minority student body. We submitted our application hoping to be a contender for this prestigious recognition. Because of the dedication of the teachers and the collaboration of our families and the school, we have been named a 2024 Dr. Jay Cummings demonstration school by TABSE. Several faculty members will present our best practices to serve students at the TABSE conference from February 28-March 3. Parent volunteerism and support are major strengths of our school. We are going to talk about parent collaboration and support during our presentation! Thank you so much for all that you each do for our students. #UBUNTU

Counselor Appreciation
Thank you so much for helping us shower our AMAZING counselor with love! She is absolutely WONDERFUL, and we are so fortunate for all that she does for our students, teachers and school community! Mrs. Robinson is the epitome of a servant leader. Although counselor appreciation week has come and gone, let's continue to celebrate her and all she does for our school and for DeSoto ISD.

Thank you for attending our PTA and Parent PLC Meetings this week! We had an outstanding time learning from Mrs. Cecilia Salvans, Manager of Urbanism for AECOM! She interactively engaged us in an activity to help us understand the many different types of engineers on each project. Mrs. Salvans also urged parents to encourage their children to pursue engineering careers if they like mathematics! It was a fun PARENT PLC!

As stated in the meeting, our PTA executive board elections will occur on March 7, 2024. Please complete the link below to add your name to the ballot by February 20, 2024. The ballot nomination form will be closed at 4:30 p.m. on February 20th. Also, to run for a position on the PTA executive board, we ask that you make yourself available to participate in a virtual Q & A. KJTMA Volunteer spotlight: Mrs. REGINA WYATT
We are fortunate at KJTMA to have many KJTMA community members who give freely of their time by volunteering for different things throughout the school year! Mrs. Wyatt has been volunteering at KJTMA for the last three years. You will find her at dances, working picture day, helping out in the cafeteria, reading to students, and doing anything that is needed to help our students. Mrs. Wyatt is the grandmother of two little ladies in elementary! When asked why she continues to volunteer at KJTMA, Mrs. Wyatt shared her heartfelt answer:
"It is a blessing for me to be able to volunteer at KJTMA, one of the premier schools in DeSoto ISD. My two granddaughters are in the third grade and fourth grade. I am thankful to make lasting memories with them as a volunteer at their school.
As a retired educator and administrator from Dallas ISD, I welcome the opportunity to give back and share my gifts, talent, and expertise. I volunteer at KJTMA as a representative of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated-Alpha Rho Chapter. I serve on the RSVP- Retired Sorors Volunteer Program.
I truly appreciate the leadership from Dr. Neely and her staff during my volunteer opportunities at KJTMA. They share their appreciation whenever I come to volunteer. Overall, it is definitely a very rewarding experience because of the supportive staff and wonderful atmosphere."
Mrs. Wyatt, we appreciate your many contributions to our school through your willingness to serve in many areas whenever needed! The students love and adore you, and having you as a volunteer who consistently exemplifies the Ubuntu Spirit! Thank you so much!
¡En KJTMA tenemos la suerte de tener muchos miembros de la comunidad de KJTMA que donan su tiempo como voluntarios para diferentes cosas a lo largo del año escolar! La Sra. Student Intent to Remain-Extension
As we start to prepare for the 2024-2025 school year, we are asking parents/guardians to fill out the student intent to remain form. Please fill out the form by Friday, February 16, 2024. Save your scholar's seat now.
Returning students do not need to reapply unless they are contacted by a member of the admissions committee. If your child has had any academic or discipline issues that have gone against the student oath of agreement, your child may need to meet with the admissions committee, parents will be notified if your child falls into this category.

Black History celebrations and opportunties for students
Black History Month has been amazing so far! Our students have had the opportunity to hear from some amazing speakers so far. Singer/songwriter Stacy Lattissaw kicked off our month-long celebration by speaking to our middle school students. When Mrs. Lattissaw spoke to middle school, Dr. Jamal Rasheed was sharing the purpose of learning about Black History with elementary students. During the second week of Black History, Mrs. Brooke Hart-Jones talked with our students about how she started her My HBCyoU Dolls business. She gave the students amazing advice to help them act on their dreams! We are thankful for our speakers, and if you know someone from which our students might benefit, please let us know!
¡El Mes de la Historia Afroamericana ha sido increíble hasta ahora! Hasta ahora, nuestros estudiantes han tenido la oportunidad de escuchar a algunos oradores increíbles. KJTMA ELEMENTARY February-2024-calendar-Black History Culture Calendar (1).docxAt KJTMA, we believe in centering ourselves in the history of marginalized groups to develop understanding, empathy, compassion, and a greater understanding and appreciation of American History. During Black History Month, your students will learn Black History during Eagle Academy under the leadership of Dr. Rasheed and the black history committee, and they can participate in sharing Black History with their peers through dress each day. You will find the Black History dress calendar attached and written in red. Students who participate using the Black History calendar are still expected to wear uniform bottoms.

Each year, under the leadership of Dr. Jamal Rasheed, our students participating in the North Star Academy author essays and present their work during the Ellis County African American Hall of Fame's annual scholarship luncheon! We would love for you to come to this event to support our students and Dr. Rasheed's work to curate and preserve African American History in Ellis County.

K-5 Parents, if you missed the Right At School virtual meeting, you can still register your student for the after-school program next semester. Three are sliding cost and flexible programming to accommodate the needs of all families. You can purchase a punch card or drop in several days a week. There are also discounts that you can apply to your afterschool care account. However, you can only use one discount. So be sure to get the one that best meets your needs. Space is VERY limited. The after school program will begin February 20, 2024.

PTA Pals Program Needs your support
We started a PEER tutoring program at KJTMA called PTA Pals. We are moving from offering general tutoring to provide more targeting tutoring to assist in preparing our scholars for the upcoming STAAR. Scholars will receive an invite to attend tutoring sessions. Parents will be contacted to determine which day(s) will work best for tutoring sessions. Students in 6th-8th grade can volunteer for 3rd - 5th grade students. Sessions will be 60 minutes and focus on the needs identified from the NWEA and interim STAAR.
If tutoring is cancelled, parents will be notified no later than 12pm the day of the tutoring session.
Tutoring may be one on one and small group depending on student needs. We need more adults to assist with the program. Don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Spellman if you want to assist our students with this program. We will resume the week of February 5th, 2024!

Our next PTA meeting is March 6, 2024 . All meetings start promptly at 6:00 PM and end at 6:30. We would love for you to join us for the meeting and join PTA. Thank you for all that contributed to the Legacy Day Fundraiser. Because of your generosity, our students will have learning opportunities in aviation, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing later this semester!
We want to thank Mrs. Rosa Hernandez for volunteering to be our campus PTA family engagement coordinator! Look out for all the fun-filled things she and the rest of the committee will bring to our KJTMA families!!!!
PTA is the only advocacy organization that supports ALL students. The mission of the PTA is 'to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.' To articulate the mission and vision of PTA, we have outlined programming and advocacy efforts in which you can get involved. Please support the mission by joining the work. DeSoto ISD Standardized Dress

Some of our students are wearing colors outside the colors prescribed in the district dresscode. The dress code colors are as follows: Solid color green, gold, black, white, or gray shirt with collar;
Thank you for helping us adhere to the standardized dress expectations this week! Students will be in Standardized Dress UNLESS we send a notice home to parents on Thursday. Every Friday, students may wear their House t-shirt or DeSoto spirit shirt with the uniform bottoms or dark colored jeans (black, gray, or dark blue without rips).
Dress down days will be announced through phone messages on Thursdays. If a small group of students earn an extended dress-down period, that information will be shared directly with the student and parents. An example of an extended dress down might look like students getting honored through the PBIS system would have several days to dress down in a row.
All KJTMA students are expected to adhere to the district guidelines for standardized dress. KJTMA students are also expected to have a KJ patch added to the left side of their shirt. Patches can be purchased individually in the school office or through the online KJTMA Uniform Store. Students must wear shirts with patches Monday-Thursday. Spirit shirts are only worn on Fridays.

Because the patches were on back order, we understand that all students may not have patches on every shirt just yet. However, we will keep you informed as to when we will strictly enforce the dress expectations. Our addition of the patches to the KJTMA uniform is for safety purposes. Because of the patches, not only will our students be identifiable as they travel throughout the district, anyone who is not a part of our campus will be identifiable in our school. Without exception, the standardized dress policy will be fully enforced as it helps us ensure the safety of all students.
Middle School Badges
Badges are a part of standardized dress expectations. All middle school students must wear their badges at all times. Students who are in athletics at McCowan must wear their badges while at the other campus. Middle school students also need their badges to enter all DeSoto ISD games. Replacement badges are $5.00. Students who do not have their badges will be charged $1.00 for temporary badges.
The standardized dress policy will be fully enforced as it helps us ensure the safety of all students in the building.

Morning and afternoon car line assistance, Lunchroom Volunteers, Fire Safety for Kinder-2nd grade, Trunk or Treat, Donuts for Dad, Picture Day, and Family Feast Day.

"Volunteers are very important partners in supporting the educational programs and activities in DeSoto ISD. Volunteers give their time, dedication, and encouragement to our students and school staff in various ways. Whether you are a parent, business/community partner or individual volunteer you are important to us for giving your services and time. All volunteers that engage in campus and student activities MUST complete the application process and receive a background clearance by applying through the NEW Voly Volunteer System. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
The following steps must be completed:
1. Click on the link https://desotoisd.voly.org
2. There is a Create a Volunteer Account form on the front page.
3. Volunteers will create a Voly account by entering the required information on the home page.
Once logged in, the volunteer will be taken straight to the volunteer application.
5. The volunteer will need to complete the fields on the volunteer application, including the Consent for Background Check.
6. Once the volunteer hits Submit/Save, they will be taken straight to the Orientation Slides. The volunteer will need to review each slide and click the check box at the end to acknowledge they have read it all.
7. Volunteers can always go back to their application to see their status (for the background check). An approved or denied email will be sent when the background check has been completed. *Applications may take up to 72 hours for approval
If there are questions or concerns, contact the school volunteer liaison where you will volunteer or email volunteer@desotoisd.org (Allow 48 hours for feedback on your request). Requests made on a Friday, will receive feedback on Tuesday before 5:00 pm. Feedback will not be provided during district holidays.

Cold and Flu Season Precautionary Measures

Health officials are reporting concerns related to the spread of RSV, cold and flu, and coronavirus as the winter months approach. Help reduce the potential spread of these health concerns as we work closely with the Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services to monitor trends related to such illnesses in the community.
RSV, cold and flu, and coronavirus can spread easily from person to person, and we need the assistance of staff and parents to help reduce this possible spread. It is important to take the following precautions to help ensure the health of our community:
Check for signs of illness every morning. (i.e., Fatigue, fever, sweating, cough, sore throat, headache.)
Do not come to school or work if sick. Symptoms usually include fever, cough or sore throat, and sometimes runny nose, body aches, headache, vomiting, or diarrhea. Those with symptoms should not return to school or work until they no longer have a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications or in the case of coronavirus, have tested negative.
Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or regular use of hand sanitizer is one of the most important steps you can take to stay healthy. Continue to teach children to cover their cough with their elbow or sleeve, and to wash their hands before and after touching their face.
Utilize appropriate cough and sneeze etiquette by coughing into the upper sleeve or using tissue and disposing of it properly.
Consider the use of masks. While DeSoto ISD no longer enforces a mask mandate, health officials encourage continued use of masks during the heightened cold and flu season.
Practice social distancing when possible in high-capacity indoor spaces and gatherings.
Consider a flu shot and/or COVID vaccine or booster to be proactive in protecting one’s health. Also consider the addition of recommended vitamins like C, D, Zinc, and Elderberry to assist in supporting immune health.
Re: Students: Please notify the school if your child is absent by 10 am on the day of the absence, and share your child’s symptoms with the school.
Re: Staff: Please notify your supervisor of the concern and potential absence as soon as possible and enter any necessary time off in the appropriate system. Please note, DeSoto ISD no longer provides COVID leave. Leave for COVID or other health-related concerns will be attributed to employees’ personal time off.
Dallas County Health officials recommend the following additional precautions:
Recognize whether you or any household member is at high risk for severe illness from RSV. cold and flu, or coronavirus. People at higher risk for complications include children under the age of five years, pregnant women, people of any age who have chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, or heart disease), and people aged 65 years and older. If any high-risk person or their household members become sick with flu-like symptoms, please contact your doctor as soon as possible to ask for advice about antiviral medications.
Get all healthy household members vaccinated.
It is important to note that DeSoto ISD has trained medical staff at each campus with protocols in place to handle communicable illnesses common to school districts like influenza (flu), pertussis (whooping cough), strep throat, head lice, and more.
Additionally, DeSoto ISD has a standard practice of maintaining a clean school environment. As is customary in school districts during flu season and as has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, we make it a point to frequently clean and sanitize our schools and classrooms regularly throughout the school day and each night during routine cleaning practices.
Student and staff safety is our top priority. We will continue to monitor the CDC and DSHS for additional information and guidance and will share information with you regarding any updates.

ReThink SEL Lessons for this week
I've included for you the ReThink SEL lessons scholars will receive this week. After receiving professional development on ReThink, every teacher will embed ReThink lessons into their Intervention/Genius Hour time at least twice a week. Both teacher and student can log into the ReThink website through Classlink. The topic is Self Management awareness with a focus on Resilience.

lost and found
Our Lost and Found is overflowing with coats, sweaters, clothes, and lunch boxes. Please take a moment and stop by the school to check for items if your scholar has misplaced any items.
We have gone through looking for names so that we can return them, but unfortunately, there were only a few items that had names on them.
