Introduction:

This session will focus on the basics of teaching students to work with wood. We start off with various levels of skills in our class but we focus at each level on ensuring students can confidently and competently work in the Innovation Studio with as much freedom as possible.

Our approach to woodwork has 3 separate areas of focus:

Safety training for the first 2 - 3 weeks.
Basic guided projects (safety projects) for the next 3 - 5 weeks.
Open ended (student choice) projects for the remainder of the course.

Students go through safety training in the studio based on OSHA. We have adapted the training over the last two years based on what works for us, and how we want to best look after our students.

Daniel's Go Kart

Daniel was in Grade 7 at ISK and he completed this project during two elective courses. He started in Woodwork and finished in Genius Hour.
