This session covers Robotics & Programming, an increasingly popular skill essential for young designers and engineers. In this session you will get an overview of how Robotics and Programming is integrated and aligned across the three school divisions at ISK. We will also discuss how we integrate these topics into our co-curricular activities and service learning programs. In our deep dive session, we'll take a hands on approach and give you a chance to build your own robot while brainstorming ideas on how to build units at your own school around the theme of "waste". Lastly, at the bottom of this page you will find several additional resources for you to explore in your own time and/or take back with you to continue learning.
Make your first Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robot(Find building instructions here)
Open the Lego Mindstorms EV3 classroom App
Connect your robot via bluetooth
Program it to move
Note: Below are the parts you need for this build.
Block-based programming is used to help children learn how to create basic programs and begin to understand programming.
As opposed to text-based programming, block-based programming refers to programming language and IDE (integrated development environment) that separates executable actions into modular portions called blocks. These blocks are generally represented with icons that can be clicked and dragged to reorder them. Editable fields, like drop-down menus, allow users to provide further input. This graphical representation of the code can demonstrate the process to new users who may be unfamiliar with programming.
Examples include;
Blockly
Unreal Engine Blueprints
Visual Logic
You are provided with 2 colour sensors and 2 connecting wires. You also have access to random lego beams and connectors. You have 3 tasks.
Brainstorm and figure out how to connect the color sensors to your robot
Program your robot to follow the black line
Now make it stop at the red line
Bonus: Can you come up with a "challenge" question around the theme of WASTE? This could be a challenge that then develops into a full unit.
