This session will cover the use of simple cardboard to create prototypes for different products. Cardboad is a versatile, cheap, sustainable, and widely available material that can be used to create aesthetic as well as working models of products. The session will explore the construction with carboard using exacto knives and rulers as well as cutting and engraving using the laserengraver. Whether the ultimated project will made out of wood, plastic, metal or anything in between carboard prototyping is often the starting point.
Corrugated 3mm cardboard
Widely available, cheap and sustainable.
Create a Glue Gun Holder from cardboard adventures
Materials Needed:
- Glue Gun
- Cardboard
- Knife / Glowforge / Software
Design Problem: Glue guns are always leaking on table when left lying on their sides. Easy to get burnt when left on.
INQUIRE (skipped):
Research: Market research. What products exists? What glue guns exist? Ergonomic considerations.
Define: Develop relevant specifciations
DEVELOP (skipped):
Brainstorm ideas
Create models of the product (Can be virtual, physical, cocneptual)
CREATE:
Follow Instructions on the right
EVALUATE
How useful is it? Evaluate the final product and the design process you followed.

Research plywood challenge ideas
Develop your design specifications (can be provided)
Develop:
Brainstorm options of what you could make with one sheet of cardboard
drawings / mini models with carboard and paper / joining techniques
Create:
More detailed plan / Technical drawing and materials list
Build your final model
Evaluate:
Ask yourself, what would I change if this was the actual plywood challenge?
Evaluate your product. Improve your design by crowdsourcing criticisms aka show it to people and ask for ideas
Things to think about
Design for disassembly (limit use of glue and fasteners)
Dematerialization (Save on material)
