Greenhouse Club
Creating a sustainable community through innovative gardening techniques and helping outside communities by setting their own gardens.
The Greenhouse Club runs the ISK Greenhouse, tree nursery, aquaponics, and biogas system with a mission to teach and promote sustainable food production and healthy eating within the wider school community. Last year we helped set up a vegetable garden at a local school using the skills and experience they gained running the ISK greenhouse. This semester during DDL the club leaders have decided to continue teaching and promoting gardening at home. Students will grow different vegetables, fruits and other plants at home on a weekly basis and and meet to compare notes and tips. The goal is to get ISK students off their computers and engage with nature/outdoors hopefully learning some lifelong skills in the process that they will be able to bring back to ISK once on campus learning resumes.
In our day-to-day work, we cover and touch upon many project around the Greenhouse. However, a lot of our work revolves around the Greenhouse itself and the planting and growing of vegetables and produce in it. Our Greenhouse meetings usually consist of a few minutes solely dedicated to weeding in and around the Greenhouse. After this we split off into groups. Some groups are dedicated to taking care of the plants which is where our main focus lies. We water, plant, fertilize, weed, and check up on our plants as our main focus, however, now with the arrival of many new projects, we cover a vast feild of yard work, from bees to biogas, the Greenhouse team is always busy at work.
Planting- Our daily work involving different plants that we then sell
Aquaponics System- A cool and innovative project in which we grow plants with just water and fish
Bee Hive- A working beehive that we can collect honey from
Biogas-Using food waste from the school to produce usable fuel
Future Projects-Interesting projects and ideas that may come to fruition in the future
