La Quinta High School Senior Conduct Policy
Receiving a diploma and participating in a Commencement Ceremony is an important milestone in life. While a student may be granted a diploma based upon earned credits and fulfilling requirements in specific academic areas, the privilege to participate in Senior Activities or the Commencement Ceremony is contingent upon maintaining acceptable scholastic, attendance, and citizenship standards.
Adherence to the Senior Conduct Policy will hopefully alleviate problems and assure Seniors that they will be included in the activities planned to honor their achievements.
Expectations and Procedures
Seniors are expected to maintain acceptable standards in the areas of academics, attendance, conduct, and citizenship.
In instances where a senior's conduct or performance does not meet school standards, as determined by the staff and administration, an administrative review will be conducted, Based upon the results of the review, students and parents will be notified and conferences held as needed.
Seniors may be placed on an academic contract if administration sees a need for it. Individuals who continue to maintain unacceptable standards and/or arc involved in disciplinary situations at the end of the school year may be excluded from one or more Senior Activities (Prom, Grad Night, Beach Trip, etc.) and/or the Commencement Ceremony. *Grad Night is a non-refundable activity.
While early identification and corrective measures will be attempted, all seniors should understand that misconduct late in the school year may result in serious disciplinary action. This is due to limited time, lack of opportunities for counseling and conferences, and fewer options being available at that time of year.
Academics:
Senior academic progress will be monitored. Seniors are expected to make a conscientious effort to pass (with Cs or better) all classes they are enrolled in.
Students who receive a failing grade will receive a notification from the school and parent conferences will be held as necessary.
Seniors must fulfill all district and state graduation requirements in order to earn a diploma. Participation in the Commencement Ceremony is a privilege. Even though a Senior may have fulfilled graduation requirements (required classes, grade point average, attendance expectations, and earned the correct number of credits), if it is determined that the senior did not meet the senior expectations outlined including the behavior expectations, the Senior can be excluded from all Senior Activities and/or the Commencement Ceremony.
Graduation with a White Gown:
Only graduating seniors who have earned a cumulative, weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher by the end of the 1st semester will be allowed the honor of graduating with a white gown during the Commencement Ceremony. Every effort will be attempted to ensure only those students that meet the criteria receive a white gown.
Attendance:
Attendance for all seniors will be monitored during the entire school year, and an attendance review will be conducted on any senior who has excessive absences: excused or unexcused whether in an actual school site classroom.
Seniors with ten (10) or more unexcused absences will have the opportunity to attend Saturday Schools and or Detentions after school to clear unexcused absences.
Students with excessive absences and tardies may result in the possible loss of senior privileges.
Seniors with unscheduled classes MUST leave campus after their last scheduled class unless they are approved to be on campus for official school business.
Attendance at the Commencement Practice is mandatory. Any student who misses Commencement Practice may not be allowed to participate in the Commencement Ceremony. This decision will be made by the school principal. Commencement practices will start promptly at 8:30 am on Wednesday, May 22nd and Thursday, May 23rd.
Also, any senior needing to make up attendance may see Mrs. Contreras or Mr. Hepner and be assigned a Saturday School(s) or Detention hours to make up absences or tardies in order to attend the Commencement Practice and the Commencement.
Conduct /Citizenship:
All Seniors are expected to maintain acceptable citizenship and conduct themselves in a positive manner.
Students cannot violate any of the following California Education Codes:
Ed. Code 48900 A1 or A2- Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person or Willfully used force or violence upon the person of another, except in self-defense
Ed. Code 48900 B- Possessed, sold or otherwise furnished any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object, including lighters
Ed. Code 48900 C- Unlawfully possessed, used, sold, or otherwise furnished, or been under the influence of, any controlled substance
Ed. Code 48900 D- Unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance
Ed. Code 48900 E- Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion
Planning or participation in "Senior Pranks” and/or involvement in acts of vandalism on the LQHS campus will not be tolerated. In addition to school disciplinary action, such as suspension, the required restitution, and the possible involvement of law enforcement, seniors involved in planning or participating in these types of activities face exclusion from senior events and/or the Commencement Ceremony.
It is our goal to work with parents and seniors to make their senior year one that is memorable and productive. We strongly advise seniors and their parents to pay close attention to the areas outlined above to prevent possible loss of any activities or ceremonies which are an important part of the final year of high school. We have every reason to believe that seniors will meet and exceed these simple expectations.
