Counseling and Consulting Services

Services I Offer
I offer individual and relationship therapy primarily to adults, and sometimes to adolescents, based on therapeutic fit and the client's needs and goals.

I also offer consulting relating to LGBTQ+ inclusion in athletics, as well as letters of recommendation for gender-affirming medical care. Please note that ongoing psychotherapy is not required for letters for gender-affirming care - please reach out directly about such a letter if interested.

My Background and Approach
I earned my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Denver, Four Corners Program, in 2018. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Colorado, and have been working in the mental health field since 2016. I have experience working with queer, transgender and non-binary individuals and families as well as individuals living with complex trauma, codependency, maladaptive behaviors, existential crises, self-esteem issues, past incarceration, panic attacks, and generalized anxiety.

My approach to therapy looks different from client to client, but I've found that the most therapeutic benefit tends to come from work involving EMDR (modality for processing trauma) and/or parts work (identifying and bringing together different parts of one's personality). These modalities acknowledge how traumatic experiences can shape our personalities and responses to triggers in ways that are deeply-rooted and challenging to untangle. I strive to help clients see more clearly the direct (or indirect) link between their challenging life experiences and the behaviors they find ineffective for them. If we know the "why" of our behavior, then we can finally start working toward the "how" of changing it.

I've found that my approach tends to be best suited for folks who are past the point of learning coping tools and communication skills. I may still teach and reinforce these, but the focus is likely to be more on processing trauma, unpacking biases, and facing hard truths. Often folks aren't sure if they've experienced trauma in their lives, but I'd argue that most of us have, and it's a matter of recognizing it and reconciling with it.

When thinking of the concept of "nature vs. nurture" in regard to mental health, I believe in the overwhelming power of nurture. The science of epigenetics shows us that our environments and our behaviors can have real impacts on our genetic makeup. While adversity, oppression, intergenerational trauma, and acute trauma can impact us in very harmful ways, we have the option to heal and grow when we're ready to. To me, that's exciting and empowering.

Me
In my own experiences in therapy, I've found it helpful when therapists have been open about who they are as people. For that reason, I share about myself and am willing to answer questions clients might have about me. That being said, I keep healthy boundaries and refrain from sharing about burdens I'm currently dealing with.
Outside of the therapy office, I enjoy endurance trail running, yoga philosophy and asana, learning about life from my two rescue pups, cooking wholesome meals, advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion in trail running, and engaging in a variety of local events so I can enhance my awareness of the community I'm part of. If you see me around town and you're a current or former client, you're more than welcome to say hello to me but please be aware that I won't approach you out of respect for your confidentiality (see more on that in my policies).
