Salt Dough Ornaments and Pomanders

Visitors craft simple, elemental ornaments using salt dough and dried orange and citrus slices. Fifth Grade will host and volunteers, will hold a peaceful atmosphere for quiet joyful work. 

Traditional Salt Dough Ornaments

Equipment

• stand mixer (this is helpful, but the dough can be kneaded by hand)

• cookie sheet(s)

• parchment paper

• cooling rack

• cutters & molds

Ingredients

• 2 cups flour (plus additional four for dusting)

• 1 cup salt

• 1 cup water

Instructions

1. mix flour, salt, and water in a mixer or by hand

2. turn dough onto a flour surface and roll out to desired thickness. (I have learned that thicker ornaments look better and don't curl when drying. I roll my dough to about 1/2" thickness.)

3. Cut ornaments with cookie cutters and/or cookie molds. If using intricately cut molds, dust with flour first.

4. Bake at 200° for 2 hours

5. If hanging as an ornament, create a hole using a toothpick, straw, etc. I found that a metal straw works great.
