Every day, our team meets people in moments of crisis — these true stories are just a few examples of the lives we’ve touched and the challenges we face together.
Recently, one of our volunteers was called to a local resource center to assist a gentleman with a severely swollen and painful hand. Upon arrival, the volunteer immediately recognized that this was no ordinary injury — the man was showing signs of a serious infection that could be life-threatening.
Realizing the urgency, our volunteer calmly convinced the client to go to the hospital, promising to stay by his side the entire time. That reassurance made all the difference. Once at the ER, doctors confirmed that the man was suffering from sepsis and told us that without immediate treatment, he likely would not have survived more than a few days on the streets.
True to his word, the volunteer stayed by the client’s side for more than five hours, offering comfort and compassion so he wouldn’t feel alone or afraid during such a frightening time.
This is exactly what Desert Aid Services was created for — to reach those who might otherwise go unseen until it’s too late. Because of one volunteer’s quick thinking, dedication, and care, a life was saved.
Over the past two and a half years, we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside two of our longest clients on their journey toward stability and healing — and we couldn’t be prouder of how far they’ve come.
When our volunteers first met the two gentlemen in March of 2023, they were living in a drainage tunnel beneath a major highway. They were understandably skeptical and cautious at first. But through patience, compassion, and persistence, our volunteers built trust — learning their stories, earning their confidence, and showing up week after week.
Over time, we watched them and their loyal dog begin to take positive steps toward change. In February of this year, we helped them enroll in a drug rehabilitation program, where they’ve shown incredible commitment. They haven’t missed a single appointment and continue to make steady progress in their recovery.
Then, in August, we were able to refer them to a housing program, and they were accepted. Today, they live in their own apartment with their dog, continuing to rebuild their lives with strength and determination.
At 1 a.m., our team received an urgent call from one of our clients — but this time, it wasn’t for themselves. Their beloved dog had stepped on a glass bottle and was bleeding badly. The client was panicked and unsure what to do.
Our team knows that emergencies don’t just happen during business hours. One of our trained volunteers immediately responded, rushing out to help. They were able to stop the bleeding, clean the wound, and carefully bandage the paw — making sure both the client and their furry companion felt safe and cared for.
Over the next few days, we continued to check in to ensure the dog’s paw was healing properly and that both were doing well. We’re happy to share that they’re both back on their feet — and paws — again!
At Desert Aid Services, compassion doesn’t clock out. Whether it’s helping a person or their best friend, we’re here when help is needed most.
Tragedy struck one day when we received a frantic call from one of our clients — he and five others were trapped inside the drainage tunnels during a sudden flash flood. The fear in his voice was unmistakable.
Our team immediately mobilized and raced to the scene. When we arrived, it was clear this was no minor situation. Acting quickly, we contacted the fire department and worked alongside them to make sure all six individuals were brought out safely.
But our work didn’t stop there. The flood had washed away nearly everything they owned. In the days that followed, our volunteers returned to provide clean, dry clothing, hygiene supplies, and emotional support, helping these individuals begin to recover and rebuild.
At Desert Aid Services, we’re there when the disaster strikes and afterwards, making sure no one is left behind.
Late one night, after a long and sweltering day, one of our volunteers was out checking on clients to make sure everyone was safe and hydrated. During those rounds, he was approached by a man who had previously been distant and hesitant to engage. This time, though, the man’s demeanor was different his eyes filled with tears.
He confided in our volunteer that he was struggling with deep depression and suicidal thoughts, and that he didn’t know who else to turn to.
Thankfully, our volunteer was trained in crisis response and knew exactly how to handle the situation. He listened, offered reassurance, and helped calm the man down. Then, he personally escorted him to the hospital, staying by his side the entire time until he was safely transferred to a behavioral health facility.
After the client was discharged, Desert Aid Services provided a bus ticket so he could return home to Central Texas, where family was waiting to welcome him back.
This moment reminds us why we do what we do, because sometimes, simply showing up and listening can change and even save a life.
