I’m excited to serve as the District Literacy Lead (DLL) here in the Dover‑Eyota School District. In this role, I work closely with teachers, building teams, administrators, and families to ensure that every student receives the literacy instruction they need to thrive.
As part of Minnesota’s READ Act, every district employs a District Literacy Lead to:
Support the District’s Implementation of the READ Act and Related Literacy Initiatives
Ensure that all buildings are aligned with Minnesota’s READ Act requirements.
Support teachers in using state-mandated literacy screening tools and interventions.
Track district-wide literacy goals and student reading outcomes.
Coordinate with administration to update the Local Literacy Plan each year.
Share resources, research, and best practices with staff to strengthen reading instruction.
GOAL: Help each building meet READ Act standards by providing tools, guidance, and ongoing support so that our students have a chance to succeed in reading.”
Collaborate with Staff to Implement Structured Literacy Practices and Evidence-Based Interventions.
Guide teachers in using structured literacy programs that are evidence-based, such as phonics-focused reading curricula.
Observe classrooms and provide feedback and coaching on reading instruction.
Work with teams to identify students who need additional support and recommend targeted interventions.
Help integrate literacy strategies across content areas (ELA, science, social studies).
GOAL: Collaborate closely with teachers and administrators to ensure that reading instruction is research-based, effective, and meets the needs of our students.
Assist in Developing Personal Learning Plans for Students Not Yet Reading at Grade Level
Analyze student literacy data from screenings and assessments to identify learning gaps.
Work with teachers to set individualized goals for reading development.
Recommend interventions and accommodations tailored to each student’s needs.
Track student progress and adjust plans as needed throughout the year.
Communicate with families about strategies to support reading at home.
GOAL: Create reading plans to support students in reaching grade-level benchmarks, with clear goals, strategies, and progress monitoring.
Lead Professional Development and Training for Staff
Plan and deliver workshops on structured literacy, interventions, and assessment tools.
Share current research, best practices, and literacy resources with staff.
Provide training on identifying and supporting students with dyslexia or reading difficulties.
Host collaborative planning sessions to align instruction and interventions across grade levels.
GOAL: Provide teachers and staff with practical training and ongoing support to enable them to implement high-quality literacy instruction every day.
Monitor Screening, Progress Monitoring, and Dyslexia Identification Processes
Oversee district-wide literacy screening schedules and tools, ensuring consistency across buildings.
Analyze progress monitoring data to identify students at risk for reading difficulties.
Ensure students showing characteristics of dyslexia are properly identified.
Collaborate with intervention teams to adjust instruction based on data.
GOAL: Track student reading data, ensure timely interventions, and support educators in identifying and helping students with dyslexia or other reading challenges.
