The District Assessment Coordinator (DAC) ensures that all state and local testing is administered fairly, accurately, and in compliance with Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) guidelines. This role connects assessment data with classroom instruction to support student growth, school improvement, and data-informed decision making.
Every school district employs a District Assessment Coordinator to:
Oversee administration of the MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments) and MTAS (Minnesota Test of Academic Skills) for grades 3–8 and high school.
Ensure all testing follows MDE procedures, security protocols, and accessibility guidelines.
Train and support building test coordinators and staff in proper test administration and accommodations.
Manage student data in PearsonAccess Next and TestNav platforms.
GOAL: Work closely with teachers and staff to ensure testing goes smoothly, students feel supported, and results are accurate and useful for instruction.
Help plan and coordinate district-wide benchmark assessments (such as FASTBridge and Capti ReadBasix).
Provide guidance on using data to improve instruction.
Collaborate with principals and instructional teams to analyze trends and set goals based on assessment outcomes.
GOAL: Help teachers see data not as a number, but as a story about each student’s learning progress.
Collaborate with special education and EL (English Learner) teams to ensure students receive appropriate testing accommodations.
Monitor compliance with MDE testing accessibility guidelines.
Communicate clearly with families about assessment schedules, purposes, and accommodations.
Review data to identify and close achievement and opportunity gaps
GOAL: Give all students an equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
Oversee the accuracy, security, and confidentiality of student test data.
Review reports and dashboards to ensure correct student records and demographics.
Support staff in using assessment dashboards and data systems effectively.
GOAL: Accurate data to help us celebrate growth, identify needs, and guide our next steps for student success.
Lead annual training sessions for building test coordinators and proctors.
Maintain ongoing communication with MDE regarding updates, guidance, and deadlines.
Share testing calendars, procedures, and resources with staff and families.
Help teachers interpret and apply assessment results in their classrooms.
GOAL: Maintain open communication and clear processes to ensure testing is as smooth and stress-free of an experience as possible for both our students and staff.
"As the District Assessment Coordinator, I’m committed to helping our district use assessment information in ways that truly make a difference. Together, we can make data meaningful, purposeful, and focused on growth for every student."
