I’ve been part of the Dover-Eyota School District for over two decades and am now in my third year of my second tenure as the Head Boys Basketball Coach, having also led the program for six years during my earlier time at Dover-Eyota. As both a coach and parent of two boys in the district, I enjoy not only leading our team but also watching my sons grow and compete in the sports they love. Over the past 25 years, I’ve coached a variety of sports, including baseball at multiple levels, which has given me a deep appreciation for the role athletics play in developing character, teamwork, and lifelong skills. Coaching allows me to combine my love of basketball with my passion for mentorship, teamwork, and helping students reach their full potential.
The Dover-Eyota boys’ basketball program will instill confidence, commitment, leadership skills, and integrity into players to use on and off the court. Our athletes will have respect for themselves, their teammates, their community, and their school, which will be built on hard work, honesty, responsibility, and teamwork.
Dover-Eyota players, families, and coaches will work together to create a positive environment in which every player can reach their full potential, increase their skills, and expand their knowledge of basketball.
The Dover-Eyota boys’ basketball team and coaches will work to increase our program across all grade levels through organized practices, games, summer camps, and workouts at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
The Dover-Eyota boys’ basketball team will be held accountable for academics, which includes being respectful, punctual, responsible, and helpful while in class.
The Dover-Eyota boys’ basketball team will support their teammates by giving words of encouragement, being positive, displaying positive body language, and challenging others in a respectful manner.
The Dover-Eyota boys’ basketball team will give maximum effort, improve their game, and be prepared for practice and games.
The Dover Eyota boys’ basketball coaches will create an environment where players feel challenged, motivated to compete at their highest level, and respected.
The Dover-Eyota boys' basketball team will implement strength, speed, and agility programs to increase a player’s physical potential.
The Dover-Eyota boys basketball coaches will communicate with players and parents.
Responsibility: A player must be responsible when it comes to himself and the team. A player will be on time, prepared, and take ownership of their actions and mistakes. Be on time for practice, games, class, team meetings, and everyday activities. Make sure to have all your gear ready for practice and games. Have your homework completed and turned in on time. Have your mind on the task ahead; don’t procrastinate. We all make mistakes; some mistakes will be made as a team, and some will be made on your own. Own up to not only your mistakes but to your team’s as well. Don’t point fingers and try to place the blame on someone else. Be accountable and part of the solution.
Sportsmanship: As a member of the Dover-Eyota Basketball Team, you will always show good sportsmanship. In the largest of wins or in the worst of losses, we will be gracious and humble. Not only will we be good sports to other teams, but we will also be good sports to other fans, coaches, administrators, and referees. We will show self-control by not throwing things, not using inappropriate body language, and not using vulgar language.
Respect/Honesty: Each coach will show respect to you as a player, and we expect the same respect in return. The coach will be honest with you. There will be no false statements or misleading remarks. If there is something you need to talk about, it is expected to be done in a respectful manner. Do not talk under your breath. If you have something to say, say it when the individual is looking at you, so you know that you have their full attention. Having strong, respectful, and honest communication will strengthen our team chemistry.
Relationship/Trust: For our program to succeed, we need to build strong relationships. Players need to have strong relationships with each other, along with the coaches. Strong relationships start with trust. Trust that your teammates will always try their best. Trust the coach is doing whatever is possible for the betterment of the team. Trust that your teachers and administrators are putting you in the most beneficial position possible. We need to believe and support each other.
Share Team Goals: We all need to believe in the team goals set at the beginning of the season. If we are not working towards the same goal, failure will set in, which leads to animosity within the team and poor attitudes. Individual goals should be obtained, but never at the cost of the team goal. Some initial goals for our program include being competitive in all contests, showing good sportsmanship, being a highly respected program on and off the basketball court, and being able to look back on your experience at Dover-Eyota with enjoyment. Be confident that we can reach the team goals we have set, and also be confident that you can reach your own individual goals for the season.
Eligibility: Your education is your first priority. Stay eligible! In our program, we need our players to be eligible all year. If extra time is needed to complete a project or assignment, a player should approach the coach. Even though extra time may be given to complete assignments, a player should be responsible enough to get their work completed in the time provided by the teacher. The use of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, mistreatment of others, or inappropriate use of social media will not be tolerated. Have the courage to walk away or to say no to detrimental situations or activities. Also, have the courage to stand up to one of your teammates when their actions might hurt a player or the team.
Attitude/Hard Work: Have a good attitude and work hard during basketball and school; nothing less will be accepted. As a teammate, make sure your fellow players are giving their best effort. Lead by example. If you show a positive attitude and work hard, others will follow. Work hard in the classroom as well. Don’t put things off until the last minute
Closing Statement: "Don’t do anything detrimental to yourself, your team, or your school. If you do something to jeopardize yourself, you are not only putting your team in jeopardy but your school as well."
Volunteer: Parents can volunteer to help our program. There will be several opportunities throughout the year to volunteer. Some opportunities might include fundraisers, concessions, tournaments, taking tickets, organizing special tasks (team dinners), serving on committees, making signs, etc. Volunteers help make things run quickly and smoothly.
Sportsmanship: Be a good fan. Stay positive. Demonstrate self-control and composure. No school wants the reputation of having poor fans. Wear our team colors and cheer for DE, not against the other team. Be a fan who supports the team and helps promote a positive culture.
Respect/Honesty: The DE Coaching staff will treat you with respect, and we expect the same in return. Discuss issues and concerns with respect and at the appropriate time. After the game is not an appropriate time to have a conversation due to high emotions. The best way to communicate is to follow the chain of command and make sure you and your player are on the same page. Take 24 hours and make sure heads are clear.
Relationships/Trust: Parents, coaches, players, and the families of the players should strive to build strong relationships. The best way to build strong relationships is through positive interaction. Make conversations with other families, offer a spot to sit, get dinner after an event, or even invite someone over. Please take the opportunity to get to know other families.
The relationship built between a parent and a coach must start with trust. Trust the coach is giving their best effort. Trust they are putting your player in the best position possible. Trust the coach is teaching your player lessons that will last a lifetime. Trust the coach is a good role model.
Share Team Goals: You are a part of our team. Believe in and support the team goals set forth. Have confidence that we will reach our goals.
Eligibility: It is the player's responsibility to remain eligible. However, if an issue arises, the player, parents, and coach should work together to resolve the problem. As a parent, it can be helpful to check in with your student on how school is going, what they did last night, who they are hanging out with, check JMC for current grades, or send an email to their teacher if there is a concern. The earlier we address potential issues, the easier they are to correct.
Attitude: Stay positive when talking about our team and the goals that we have set out to accomplish. Keep a positive attitude towards the players, coaches, fellow parents, school, and administration. Encouragement is the best way to stay positive. Don’t use social media as an outlet. Talk with others in a positive and respectful manner. If your comment is negative, please keep that comment to yourself. Negative comments will only hurt the culture we are trying to build.
Closing statement: "Eagle parents are the sixth man on the Dover-Eyota basketball team. With your encouragement, enthusiasm, and energy towards the team, it will feel like we are playing six on five."
