There is excellent online support readily available through the Scoilnet physical literacy website which will be used and explored in our cluster meetings.
· Approaches to teaching, learning and assessment
Teaching “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” (Confucius)
Using the Move Well Move Often booklet and website, teachers will use videos to introduce the fundamental movement skills and highlight the key differences between each stage of development - exploring, developing and mastering. During the lesson students will use assessment templates with photographs as well as video on their mobile devices which will illustrate the teaching points of each skill.
Group work and peer observation are key cornerstones of our project as they “enable pupils in pairs to reflect critically on their own progress and develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for their own learning” (Move Well, Move Often Teacher Guide). Students will use their mobile device to record and assess their partner’s skill and if required view the key skill objectives illustrated in the video.
Constructing their own learning to improve following feedback.
Students will develop the soft skills coaching monitoring team members.
Assessment Monitoring
Teachers will use a variety of assessment tools and pick the most suitable depending on their class, the lesson etc using the suite of templates from the PDST Move Well Move Often booklets and website. These assessment tools include; teacher checklists, peer observation checklists, individual assessment profile, self assessment
Digital resources will be shared via ePortofolio app SeeSaw or Showbie (secondary school) and student’s video will be recorded on the app which will allow the student to develop a suite of videos of their fundamental skills. This will be an invaluable resource for teachers to assess their students and share best practice within the cluster. This innovate practice will help students to develop the skills and knowledge required to develop videos on ePortofolio which could be used for Physical Education as a Leaving Certificate subject.
How the impact of the project will be determined
Teachers and Principals will initially note a difference in the lesson plans as teacher will use more ICT Resources and a wider variety of assessment tools and templates.
Sample children’s stage of development will be assessed and tracked using PDST Fundamental Movement Skill targets - exploring, developing and mastering. These can be passed on at the end of the year to their teacher for the following year and could be most beneficial for SEN teachers.
Children’s individual progress will be easily assessed on their videos recorded and stored on the ePortofolio app SeeSaw.
Our ePortfolios will be a vital resources to track the development of the fundamental movements skills of children over a number of years and will be able to view the students from Exploring to Developing and to the Mastering stage of learning. It will be particularly useful for students to develop ePortofolios and the required digital skills associated with them for the proposed Physical Education Leaving Certificate subject.
Sharing of experiences, ideas, lessons and videos at cluster meetings by watching our lesson videos and examining the progress of the students will be great evaluation.
In year three, the full use of ePortfolio will be extended to lesson objective sharing tasks in our cluster classrooms in other curricular subjects and to communicating appropriate material with parents through this evaluation process at cluster and school level.
