What's Happening?
The rampant stray animal dilemma in the Philippines has long been detrimental to the country’s animal welfare and, on a larger scale, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-Being. To support this, Senior Vice President of Campaigns for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Jason Baker reports that the number of stray animals struggling to survive on the streets of the Philippines which are vulnerable to euthanization in municipal pounds is at an all-time high. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) reported in a 2020 article that there were roughly 12 million stray cats and dogs roaming the streets of the Philippines in 2019. Additionally, out of 50 nations throughout the world, the Philippines came in at 10th on the Voiceless Animal Cruelty Index, which deliberates based on the level of ignorant animal mistreatment.
Why Did We Launch This Project?
Animal welfare is how animals survive with the conditions they are living with. This becomes increasingly important as animal cruelty becomes a serious issue in our society. There are several animal shelters that assist in providing assistance to unfortunate homeless and abandoned animals. However, these shelters face a variety of issues, including overcrowding, which leads to a lack of resources, and protecting an animal's welfare entails meeting its physical and mental requirements. Hence, Project PUSA came to fruition.
Animal rights are moral or legal privileges accorded to animals, typically because of the complexity of their social, emotional, and cognitive lives. The main goal of Project PUSA is to take initial action on issues regarding the rampant animal cruelty occurring within Angeles City. Wherein, PAC encourages young people, especially the youth, to protect our precious animals. Furthermore, this project intends to hold a fundraising program that will assist animal shelters in providing animal necessities. Through this program, residents of animal shelters will receive kind and humane medical care and needs.
