Context and Rationale
English is one of the most important weapons needed to meet the demands and standard of the 21st century. Being proficient to its surrounded skills drives a pupil to be effective listener, speaker, reader, and writer, which is an edge in becoming globally competitive. However, a rich foundation of grammar is deemed necessary to fully understand and master the competencies towards better learning outcomes. Grammar is the support system of communication and pupils must learn to communicate it better. Grammar explains the why and how of language.
As Ebrahimi et.al (2018) found in their studies that in realization of verb, verbs of different tenses as to present, past and future are found to be a problem in writing thus it is required to discuss to give clear picture of how verbs are used so it may help the learners equipped with the ability to use the verb appropriately.
Making videos supported by rich literacy is capable of producing creative and meaningful media. Making video explainer media can be done together with students as project assignments, so the meaningfulness of the material becomes deeper, as a form of subject collaboration with IT skills, Mafazah H. et. Al (2020).
Futhermore, added that Videos made by teachers to meet specific learning outcomes, are a feature of the technological enhanced learning revolution that is sweeping through higher education. Pedagogical research into teaching videos has been broadly positive and focused on their benefits for students’ experience as well as how specific features of films can enhance learning and attainment, Harrison, T. (2020).
Moreover, Sung, H. Y.et. al. (2019) the employed video technology fosters greater self-awareness and a more accurate perception of skill levels, and enhances students' self-efficacy. The contextualized learning experience also enables students to better appreciate the relevance of oral communication to their future careers. The paper extends the literature on video technology, self-efficacy, and generic skills development in accounting education, and provides relevant stakeholders with evidence of an authentic activity that can assist with bridging the skills-expectation gap.
The DepEd developed the Basic Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) a package of education intervention that would respond to basic education challenges brought about by the COVID 19. In developing the BE-LCP DepEd engaged internal and external stakeholders for inputs in the design of learning delivery strategy and operational direction that ensures the health, safety and well-being of the learners and teachers and personnel of the department, as stated in Dep Ed Order N0. 12. S. 2020.
Whereas , DepEd Order 012, s 2020, give emphasis on the role of the whole community, it is clearly stated that together the need to increase the engagement of the parents, community leaders and knowledgeable others for support and collaboration in line with the battle cry “Para sa Bata, Para sa Bayan sama-sama sa SULONG EDUKALIDAD” “Handang Isip, Handang Puso, Handang Bukas.”
During this pandemic, Tokitok Elementary School with the encouragement and supervision of the School head that teachers are encourage to device an intervention into the subject that shows least mastered. The researcher conducted a diagnostic test on March 2020 and the result shows that English subject is the least mastered particularly Fourth Quarter with the following competencies (ENGG-Ig-4.4.1) Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structure using tenses of verb. As to the result of the Summative Test for the Second Quarter, there are 12 out of 20 pupils who did not meet the 75% Mean Performance Achievement. And with the simple interview made to the parents it is found out that they are also hard up in this subject that’s why they were not able to teach their children in doing their modules and cannot give the correct answer being asked.
From these reasons, the researcher thinks for an intervention that will help the Grade 6 pupils improve the correct usage of verb tenses in constructing sentences through Explainer Video accompanied with varied activity worksheet will be a great help for the pupils aside from the given modules to uplift their academic performance in English subject.
