With a burning passion to bring victory, the Potrero National High School Taekwondo team brought triumph, leading top places in the taekwondo tournament of the Division Palaro last March 4, 2023, at Tugatog National High School.
The winners, all Grade 10 students, included the gold medalists: Ricardo Enriquez of Humility in the Open Weight category to represent the Malabon City division at the NCR Palaro, Nicole Allison Farro of Generous in the Fin Weight category, Wyne Consolacion of Faith in the Light Weight category; and the silver medalists, Mark Henry Alilano of Integrity in the Light Weight category, and Nicole Tuliao of Humility in the Welter Weight category.
"Disiplina sa sarili at sa training, also camaraderie. Hindi lang sarili namin [yung] iniisip at sinusuportahan [pero] sa buong journey namin bilang player," Athlete Wyne Consolacion shared in an interview on how they prepare to bag the victory. "Sa training all out kami, ayaw naming short cut yung mga routines. Sayang kasi yung oppurtunity, kahit naman nakakapagod pero pagkatapos ng mahabang training, nakaka fullfill siya," she added.
The five taekwondo contenders, composed of two male athletes and three female athletes as Cluster B players, go through several phases of training with their individual categories in order to be selected as the school’s representative. Together with their coach, teacher, Aldrin Banyaga, and trainer Edjohn Bullo, they were trained to strengthen their attacks, defenses, and tactics on the school grounds three times a week and at times every Saturday on the first floor of SM Sangandaan, Caloocan City.
According to Banyaga, determination and proper training were their secret weapons to bag the top places in the competition.
In the next matches next year, Potreronian athletes are eager and determined to come back stronger and experienced to continuously be at the top of every athletic event.
