In early 1800, Calaoagan Dackel was a virgin forest, untouched by the cruel loggers. On that time that Aetas or the Aborigins (now popularly called “AGAYS”) were the only dwelllers. The place was first explored by the late Francisco Batacan and Isidro Palingayan in 1869.Also among the first settlers of Calaoagan Dackel were late Tiburcio Puguid,Cayetano Dumlao and Agustin Baraoidan who came at the place 1898.
Calaoagan Dackel was originally called Ilang-Ilang for the abundance of Ilang-Ilang tree on that place, thus naming after it.
In 1900, Ilang-Ilang was changed by the Aetas into Calaoagan in honor for the Ilocano settlers from Laoag.Calaoagan then have five sitios namely:Baraoidan, Batug, Capiddigan, Langgan and Lucong.
In 1902, Calaoagan was re-named into Calaoagan Dackel for the reason that the people from Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur migrated on it.
The Ilocano settlers were farmers and known for being hard workers and patient. Considering that the soil was very fertile and suited for agriculture, they planted tobacco, corn and upland rice. Life for the first settlers was so easy, so they decided to get their families, relatives and friends from Ilocos to apply homestead in Calaoagan Dackel.
So Langgan was first settled by Fortunato Tayamin and Leocardo Batacan. Baraoidan was settled by Agustin Baraoidan and his relatives thus naming the place after him. The first settlers of sitio Batug were Estanismo Ngayan and Isidro Bruno. Capiddigan was settled by theAguinaldo’s, Colobong, and the Jose families while Lucong was settled by Vicente Bautista and Gervacio Corpus.
In 1910, Chinese merchants tried to explore the place. It was Didian Dy and Alfonso Chua who was the first Chinese settler of Calaoagan Dackel. They introduced the “Barter System” of business, bringing of them clothes, salt, bagoong, lard and other prime commodities to barter with corn, rice and tobacco produce by people of Calaoagan Dackel and its neighbouring barangays. These businessmen used rafts, boats and sometimes bull cart and carabaos as a means transporting their cargos.
Calaoagan Dackel has a total land area of 500 hectares ,which was described as hilly, mountainous, and plain. It is suited for aricultural, industrial, commercial and residential purposes. The soil is best described as loan and clay fitted for planting rice, corn and other agriculture products.
The distance of of Calaoagan Dackel from town proper is approximately 15 kilometers, the place is bounded on the north by Langgan, on the south by the Dummun River, on the East by Baraoidan and on the west Palagao-Batug.
The two sitios of Calaoagan Dackel namely: Baraoidan and Capiddigan became an independent barangays while batug became a sitio of Palagao Norte. Langgan and Lucong became sitios of the neighbouring barangay (Nabaccayan). Since then; Calaoagan became an independent, progressive and peaceful barangay.
In the 1970’s and early part of 1980’s Calaoagan Dackel experienced its dark history. It was on this time when New People’s Army infiltrated and ruled the place. The economic, social, and political status of the barangay was shattered while the peace and order was totally distraught.
In the early part of 1980’s Colonel Rodolfo Aguinaldo, who was the governor of Cagayan that time, set foot in Calaoagan Dackel. It was only on that time then the community began to re-establish its lost status.
Thus in 1983 the long lost status of Calaoagan Dackel was completely restored. The Camp David Corpuz was found and created by Aguinaldo. The camp is located within the heart of Calaoagan Dackel and it serves as temporary resident of NPA-surrenderees and their families. Moreover the camp was named after the David Corpuz, who was an NPA surrenderee and became faithful subordinate of Aguinaldo. David Corpuz, was the first surrenderee died under the leadership of Aguinaldo during his stay in the military. Furthermore, the camp is being manned by the military and the surrenderees themselves who are now supporting the present administration. In fact, the station commanderee is also surrendered himself, he is Mr. Aurelio Sumagay popularlt known as “ Ka tuking”.
At present Calaoagan Dackel I more or less considered as complete community in itself. It has known schools a complete one from preparation to high school. It has one (1) Prostestant church although Roman Catholic comprised dominantly its population. The barangay Health station was built through a self -help project by the Calaoagenians themselves. Through also the effort of the residents, a mini park was created just beside the Calaoagan Dackel elementary School. Being an independent barangay it has its government and private organization. Some of these are: the barangay officials, Parent Teachers Association, Samahang Nayon Association, Women’s club, etc. The existing religious organization is the Christian Assembly Church of Today by the Protestants.
For the coming year 1989, Calaoagan Dackel is being targeted by the Department of Health, particularly the Environmental Sanitation, as the “PILOT BARANGAY” for the town of Gattaran.
Since 1989 to the present, there is a lot of development in the barangay.
There’s an increase of population in the community because of the Calaogan Dackel National Hing School (CDNHS) as well as the elementary level. The youth of citizenry are encouraged to pursue their studies so literacy program leads to a better and disciplined youth.
The presence of hospital/clinics in the community solves the problem of unhealthy citizen.
The people are encouraged to practice good health habits equipped with safe drinking or source supply and have toilets for every house in the barangay. Having a herbal garden is now located in every zone/houses for medicinal purposes.
With the improvement of the barangay, the community as a whole work hand in hand to carry on whatever projects planned. Through the resourcefulness, love and cooperation of the community, there is a success. The development is a partnership job and responsibility of the school and the barangay folks. Municipal programs as well as provincial program of the government were being attained through our officials/leaders in achieving its goal.
