At Denbigh, we recognise the importance of high-quality teaching of writing. We want to establish a ‘love’ of writing in our students.
When our pupils begin in EYFS, we focus on building their fine motor control. Through play we plan activities to build the strength in their hands and fingers, which in turn will support the children to hold and use pencils, scissors and other apparatus. For further support on fine motor activities, click here to visit the EYFS Hub.
From here we encourage mark making and name writing, which then builds into CVC writing and short sentences. We encourage the children to write in their play and about topics that interest them, i.e. label your construction project, or describe the princess.
As we move our children on, we understand the importance of capturing their interest to encourage a love of writing. We write every single day, in a variety of contexts and across a variety of genres.
Each year we build on the children's knowledge and skills to increase their independence and confidence in their writing. We use a book curriculum and choose books that suit the current cohort, and we aim to give the children as many real life experiences as possible.
