Curriculum Vision
Everyday, we strive to create a passionate reading community as we know that confident readers become successful life-learners. Our reading journey begins from day one of school where children receive systematic teaching of phonics through Read Write Inc. which continues until each child reaches fluency. Every child is taught a range of comprehension strategies from the outset so that they can make sense of both written and visual media.
Writing within Denbigh Primary School is a vital part of the curriculum as children will use writing in all areas of their learning. Writing gives children a voice to share their ideas with the world and has a fundamental importance in everyday life. It is our vision that every child will learn to become a writer by being given exciting, inspiring and original materials to support and challenge them. We want to encourage our children to be enthusiastic writers who will develop a genuine love of writing. They will use writing to express themselves and communicate with others and will write independently for a range or purposes.
Context
As a predominantly EAL school, the teaching of English (reading, writing, speaking/listening and grammar) takes a high priority across the whole curriculum. By the time children leave our school, we expect them to communicate through speaking and listening, reading and writing, with confidence, fluency and understanding and in a range of situations. We want every child to take pleasure in reading across a range of genres and have a strong motivation to read for a variety of purposes.
Speaking and listening is key to our curriculum and children are taught to voice their ideas, get involved in discussion and debate as well as join in with drama and role play. We develop a love of reading; reading for pleasure as well as a stimulus for vocabulary development and writing. Children read and are read to daily. Writing is taught though a book curriculum; your termly curriculum letter will inform you of these book choices. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, children have a daily phonics lesson using ‘Read Write Inc’.
