The Phonics Screening Check is a compulsory assessment taken by all children in Year 1 in June. The phonics screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words (nonsense or alien words). These pseudo-words are depicted in the test next to a picture of a monster/alien. The test lasts 5-10 minutes and is taken individually as a child sits with a teacher from school. Currently to pass, they must correctly read aloud 32/40 of the words, however the pass rate is not released until the check is complete and is subject to change each year.
Children who fall below the expected standard will receive additional support to improve their decoding skills in Year 2 and will retake the test.
More information on the phonics screening check can be found on the GOV.UK website.
