We have designed self-guided tours of different parts of Newham so you can put yourself in the shoes of people living in those neighbourhoods.
They may be areas you've passed through yourself or that you've never been to. It's also a way to experience the challenges & opportunities of 15 minute neighbourhoods and how they intersect.
For each tour below, you will be able to access a Google Map as a visual, a video overview of each neighbourhood and a set of steps to take. So that you can share your experiences of the tours afterwards in your next micro group, you will see below a set of prompt questions to answer. Use whatever method works best for you to capture the evidence to those questions, by text, photo, or video.

Download a copy of the map you will be using
Take a fully charged phone in case of emergency
Bring something you can take some notes with, such as your phone or a notebook
Have a think about what you want to get from the tour, are there particular sites you are looking out for?
Check current covid guidance and stay safe
Bring a bottle of water and a snack
Take photos to share with other members in the Gallery
Take some notes of anything that stands out to you
Have a think about the following questions:
Who do you think uses the facilities (shops, services, playgrounds, schools, centres)?
How do you think most people travel here?
What are most people doing in this area?
Would this area meet all your basic needs?
What makes this a pleasant place to be?
What makes it unpleasant or harder to use?
Have you been here before? Would you come again? Why?
Have fun!
Who is doing the tour?
Because of coronavirus restrictions, we think the safest option is for Assembly Members to do the tours on their own. This means the tours are self-guided, but we'll help you plan and prepare with this guide!
Why am I doing a tour?
To gather insight on a local area that will inform your thinking for 15 minute neighbourhoods and arriving at recommendations for the council and its partners to act upon.
How do I do a tour?
Look at the routes. Pick one (or more) of the tours that you are interested in.
https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/ a useful resource on how to plan your journey to get there.
Choose a time and date. You will need to self-organise a time that works for you. We suggest Saturday 29th January, as this was a date you signed up to.
Take part in a tour before your next microgroup. Tour information will be available for the remainder of the Assembly, and so you are welcome to complete additional tours at times that works for you. We recommend taking part in at least one tour before your microgroup, as you will be discussing the routes you took and what you saw.
Read the tour guide sheet. The guide sheet will be uploaded to the microsite before Saturday 29th January and will include a map, what to look out for, and why this tour has been chosen. Open and download the sheet to your phone to help you explore 15 minute neighbourhoods.
Know the route. You can look up the route using Google Maps in advance, and you can even save the route so that you can access it if you are offline.
Watch the tour videos. These videos will be uploaded before Saturday 29th January and will explain some of the key features to look out for on the tours.
Stay safe. Make sure you have everything you need for your tour: water, charged phone, weather-appropriate clothes, map, etc.
Other options. If you are unable to take part in the tour, for reasons such as geography or mobility, please have a look at the tour videos and jot down some of your thoughts.
How should I capture my tour experience?
Please make notes, take photos or short videos to record your thoughts and ideas. Each tour has suggested questions to think about while you are following the route. We can upload these to the microsite gallery.
What should I do if I spot an issue while on the tour?
While you're out and about doing a tour, if you notice any graffiti, fly-tipping, fly-posting, litter, and/or dog-fouling, you can report it via Love Newham: https://www.newham.gov.uk/contact-information/love-newham-app-website
