Our Scholastic Book Fair is here!

Our Scholastic Book Fair will be open to students during their classroom library visits from April 8 to 19.  If your child is absent when their class comes down, we will find another time for them to enjoy visiting the book fair.

The fair will be open for parents to come in with their children before school from 8:30 to 8:55am April 9 to 19 (except April 10, 16, 17) and after school from 3 to 3:30pm April 9 to 18 (except April 16).

As always, all students are welcome to enjoy the book fair during class visits - no purchase necessary.  To see photos of our Book Fair, please click on the carousel of photos below.  The prizes will be shown the second week of the fair.

Anyone purchasing 'Power Play' - book 7 in the Hockey Super Six series by Kevin Sylvester - will again be able to get a personalized book plate.

Thanks again for all your support in our library and for helping foster  a love of books in your child.

Remember this contest?

Congratulations to Regina in Grade 7 who is one of the winners!  Her poem will be published in their book being coming out in a few months.

April will be a busy month in our Cougar Canyon library.  The big events this month will be our Scholastic Book Fair, Delta Reading Link Challenge and author visits.

The week of April 2 to 5, the students will be learning about the Scholastic Book Fair during their classroom library times.  They will also be invited to check out more books than usual that week as there will be no book check out during the book fair.

Good luck to our Reading Link Challenge winning team "Unknown".  They will be competing in the Delta wide challenge on April 10.

Thanks to the Barbara Jarvis Foundation grant, students at Cougar Canyon will be meeting an author virtually or in person this month.

If you have any questions about the library, the website or if you just want to say, "Hi', please email me at lhignell@deltaschools.ca.

Looking forward to connecting with you if you are able to stop in for a look around or maybe a book fair visit.

Take care and Happy Spring,

Reading Link Challenge 2023/24

March -

What a great turn out for Reading Link Challenge this year!  We had seven teams that practiced and learned so much about the six books selected this year.  In March, our school competition was held to see which team would be representing our school at the Delta wide challenge on April 10 at Annieville Elementary.  Our top four teams were just THREE points apart - what a close race!

Congratulations to 'Unknown' and best of luck in April to Eliana, Emma, Madeline, Sabthanaa and Sonam!

What happens to donated books at Cougar Canyon?

We often get donations from current and former students and their families at Cougar Canyon Elementary.  You might wonder what happens to them?  If the books are in good condition but too mature just yet for our students, they are sent to Seaquam to use in their library and classroom libraries.  If they are 'just right' for our students, a check is done to see if we already have them.  If not and we'd like them, they are added to our collection.  If we already have a copy, our copy is pulled to check its condition.  Ones that have been 'well loved' will be swapped out for a newer/better condition copy for our library.  Teachers are given the chance to look through the books to add to their classroom libraries, some books will find their way into our June Swap and some will be placed in our curbside library.  Then what becomes of all the remaining books?  They are boxed up and taken to the Delta home of a volunteer for Afretech where they are labelled and sent to help fill  libraries being built in Africa.  In July 2023, thanks to your donations, we were able to donate 42 boxes of books that are heading to a new library to make a lot of children very happy.

Our curbside library was cleaned up

and refilled in the beginning of July.

A few of the 42 boxes of books heading to Africa.

History Anyone?

During the last week of September and the first week of October, library classes were looking at various artifacts sent to us from the History Museum in Quebec.  Some of our items differed slightly from these images, but I am using them as we were asked not to photograph the real artifacts.

It was amazing to be able to pass around the items and learn a little about the past through them.

We had over 50 students complete their Summer Reading Club 2022 and bring it in to the library to show that they completed their 49 days of reading.  Way to go to all of you and hope you're enjoying what you chose from the rewards trays and your book prize. Congratulations go to Leah who was the Grand Prize winner.  I'm so proud to see so many summer readers at Cougar Canyon.

Cougar Canyon's June Book Swap was a great success!

Thank you to all the students who brought in gently used books to include them in our June Book Swap.  The swap was held on Thursday, June 23, when the students were invited to come down to the library and 'buy' their new books to enjoy during the summer.  Happy Reading!

Congratulation to all the teams - they put a lot of work into reading the books and practicing over the lunch hours from November to March!  In November,  all classes had a chance to look at many of the previous books chosen for this programme as well as a closer look at this year's selections.  These books are still available for check out in a new section for Reading Link Challenge books.

Congratulations to the participants in the Summer Reading Club

Over 40 students came into the library to show their booklets or medals from the Summer Reading Club.  Way to go, Cougars!

Each of these students, who completed the 49 days of reading, collected a prize and a book of their choice for their efforts.

Thanks so much for your help in promoting summer reading!

Summer 2021

There were over 1000 new or swapped out books added to our collection during the summer of 2021.  Many of our other books found new 'homes' and it has been interesting watching the students trying to find their favourites!  If you find any of the new books on our catalogue and you would like to take advantage of placing the book(s) on hold, do so quickly.  Many of our new books will have LONG waitlists once they are displayed in September and October.  Once all the waiting students have borrowed our new books, they will appear on the shelves in their regular spots.

Reading Day 2021

May 4th, 2021 was this year's Reading Day at Cougar Canyon.  Not only was it Reading Day, but also PJ Day and Star Wars Day.  We had many people join us virtually to share their love of reading and our special guest was author and illustrator Kevin Sylvester.  It was truly a memorable day and 'May the fourth' was with us!

Kevin Sylvester 'zoomed' into the primary and intermediate classrooms.

He shared so much about being an author and illustrator.

He helped us learned to 'curve the line' of our stick figures, add movement

and use 'mistakes' to add detail and flair to our drawings.

Mr. Matt Jamiesen, former teacher and administrator in Delta, joined multiple classes in three separate fun filled and informative 'zooms.'

Cougar Canyon students

enjoyed a chance to

drop everything and read.

What a great way to spend a day!

Thank you to all our presenters for helping us enjoy a 'unique' Reading Day this year.

Reading Link Challenge 2020/2021

This year we had five teams from five different classes reading up to six books to prepare for our Cougar Canyon Reading Link Challenge.  Our participants this year were:

Div. 6 - Radhika, Ojasvi, Hussain and Angelina

Div. 7 - Ravleen, Nemendi, Hayley, Charlotte, Angad and Amanat

Div. 8 - Rachel, Preet, Manraj, and Anna

Div. 9 - Rebecca, Owen, Kinley, Ilya, Harry, Arya and Addison

Div. 10 Sehraan, Regina, Naomi, Kyra and Elsa

Can't wait to see what books are chosen for next year!

Div. 9 was our 2021 CC winner!

After thirty questions and ten tie breaker questions, Division 9 became the winner for our school this year.  On April 21, they competed via zoom to represent us in the Delta Challenge.

The team had a great time!  Congratulations go to South Park's team; they will continue on to represent Delta at the next challenge.

Congratulations to all our participants - you worked hard and made us proud.  Way to go, Cougars!

Do you remember the car parade?

Check out the seven photos to the left and look carefully for the hidden books.

What a fun way to show off some of the new books that were added to our library in the spring of 2020.

Can you find any books that I have read to your class?

Can you find books that you have already read or you want to read?

If you find any books that you want to read, send me a note or email so I can put you on the hold list.
