We have one more visit with Mr. Peter DeConti sharing the new technology we are borrowing from our District. Our Grade Two through Seven classes have been having a lot of fun learning and working on Stop Motion Pro. Final 'movies' will be shared in class the second week of March.
The Cougar Canyon Reading Link Challenge took place on Thursday, March 5. Our teams were:
The All Star Readers, The Goldfish, The Olympic Gold Star Readers, The Rapid Readers, The Reading Couch Potatoes, The Reading Warriors and The Ultra-Readers
The challenge was exceptionally close and all our teams did a great job! There were only two points between first and fourth place. We are so proud of all their hard work and great attitude throughout the training leading up to this event. These teams started their journey in November and still had energy to spare in March. Way to go!
Congratulations to our winning team, the Rapid Readers, who will represent Cougar Canyon at the district challenge held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at Pebble Hill Elementary. Good luck!
Thank you to our local Fraser Valley Regional Library, the George Mackie Library, for their support and 36 books for this challenge. A special thank you to Ms. Minakshi Sidhu, George Mackie's youth librarian for her attendance at our event to help out.
Here are the Reading Link Challenge Titles for this school year.

Here we go marching into a new month!
In the month of March we only have two weeks till Spring Break, but they will be filled with a lot of exciting things happening in the Cougar Canyon Library and two winners will be announced!
Our Grade 4 and 5 Reading Link Challenge participants will have their final practice at lunch on Tuesday, March 3. Our school wide challenge to select the team that will represent Cougar Canyon at the Delta challenge will take place between recess and lunch on Thursday, March 5. Good luck to all our teams!

Delta Reads will wrap up for our eight new picture books that have been going head to head since January to see which our school will choose as the best. The finalists are 'Hedgehogs Don't/Do Wear Underwear' and 'Don't Trust Fish'. Thanks to Delta School District for supporting this activity and providing us with the books.
We will have the last of the new books to display on our hold shelves from the Scholastic Book Fair earnings and a TD volunteer grant (thank you to our hard-working volunteer who made this possible).
The week before the holidays, students will be allowed to take out extra books based on if they have any overdue books. Please help your children bring in their books - email reminders will be going home.
On a more personal note, March is also the last month that I will be your Teacher Librarian. My first day of retirement will be April 1st - no fooling! It has been a wonderful journey for nearly eight years in your library. I will miss the students, but promise to be back to visit.
f you have any questions about the library, the website or if you just want to say, "Hi', please email me at lhignell@deltaschools.ca.
Take care and keep on reading,
Mrs. Hignell
We often get donations from current and former students and their families at Cougar Canyon Elementary. You might wonder what happens to them? If the books are in good condition but too mature just yet for our students, they are sent to Seaquam to use in their library and classroom libraries. If they are 'just right' for our students, a check is done to see if we already have them. If not and we'd like them, they are added to our collection. If we already have a copy, our copy is pulled to check its condition. Ones that have been 'well loved' will be swapped out for a newer/better condition copy for our library. Teachers are given the chance to look through the books to add to their classroom libraries, some books will find their way into our June Swap and some will be placed in our curbside library. Then what becomes of all the remaining books? They are boxed up and taken to the Delta home of a volunteer for Afretech where they are labelled and sent to help fill libraries being built in Africa. In the last four years, thanks to your donations, we have been able to donate over 100 boxes of books that helped fill many new libraries to share the love of reading and make a lot of children very happy. As always, thank you for your support.

What a fun filled day of readers from our community, buddy reading and classroom activities.
Special thanks to our readers who took time to come and read with our school. Many of our classes were able to meet the Mayor and School Board members, the Community Manager from the Vancouver Rise (with the trophy!), a local realtor, local authors and many of our district's staff. We are so thankful for all or their participation to make this day such a success.
Congratulations also to our 52 winners of new books. Happy Reading!
Congratulations to our winners in December for Coug's Nice List. Many students were seen randomly doing 'nice' things and were entered in our draw. Thirty students were called down to choose a prize. It's wonderful to see so many helpful students at Cougar Canyon.

Fingers crossed for the results coming in the Spring...
On the heels of our two-week book fair, we were lucky enough to have several instructors from Code Ninjas in our library. They helped the students to solve out coded messages in either binary or morse code and introduced two ‘new to us’ robotics that the students used block coding to move. Several classes also worked on creating circuits. A flyer was sent home with each student that included a special offer from Code Ninjas Delta located next to Walmart in Scottsdale Mall. They also invited all students to come to their Open House on October 31 when the mall is open for trick or treating. They will have all their robotics and technology on display and treats for those who stop in to say ‘hi’. Thanks again to the Code Ninja instructors for all the time they spent with us and the learning that occurred.
You can learn more about Code Ninjas Delta at

Thank you so much for supporting our October Scholastic Book Fair!

We also plan to invite a few authors to share their stories with our classes in the new year.
Thanks again for all your support in our library and for helping foster a love of books in your child.

History Anyone?
During the last week of September and the first week of October 2022, library classes were looking at various artifacts sent to us from the History Museum in Quebec. Some of our items differed slightly from these images, but I am using them as we were asked not to photograph the real artifacts.
It was amazing to be able to pass around the items and learn a little about the past through them.
We had over 50 students complete their Summer Reading Club 2022 and bring it in to the library to show that they completed their 49 days of reading. Way to go to all of you and hope you're enjoying what you chose from the rewards trays and your book prize. Congratulations go to Leah who was the Grand Prize winner. I'm so proud to see so many summer readers at Cougar Canyon.

Over 40 students came into the library to show their booklets or medals from the Summer Reading Club. Way to go, Cougars!
Each of these students, who completed the 49 days of reading, collected a prize and a book of their choice for their efforts.
Thanks so much for your help in promoting summer reading!
There were over 1000 new or swapped out books added to our collection during the summer of 2021. Many of our other books found new 'homes' and it has been interesting watching the students trying to find their favourites! If you find any of the new books on our catalogue and you would like to take advantage of placing the book(s) on hold, do so quickly. Many of our new books will have LONG waitlists once they are displayed in September and October. Once all the waiting students have borrowed our new books, they will appear on the shelves in their regular spots.
May 4th, 2021 was this year's Reading Day at Cougar Canyon. Not only was it Reading Day, but also PJ Day and Star Wars Day. We had many people join us virtually to share their love of reading and our special guest was author and illustrator Kevin Sylvester. It was truly a memorable day and 'May the fourth' was with us!
Kevin Sylvester 'zoomed' into the primary and intermediate classrooms.
He shared so much about being an author and illustrator.
He helped us learned to 'curve the line' of our stick figures, add movement
and use 'mistakes' to add detail and flair to our drawings.
Mr. Matt Jamiesen, former teacher and administrator in Delta, joined multiple classes in three separate fun filled and informative 'zooms.'
Cougar Canyon students
enjoyed a chance to
drop everything and read.
Thank you to all our presenters for helping us enjoy a 'unique' Reading Day this year.
This year we had five teams from five different classes reading up to six books to prepare for our Cougar Canyon Reading Link Challenge. Our participants this year were:
Div. 6 - Radhika, Ojasvi, Hussain and Angelina

Div. 8 - Rachel, Preet, Manraj, and Anna
Div. 9 - Rebecca, Owen, Kinley, Ilya, Harry, Arya and Addison
Div. 10 Sehraan, Regina, Naomi, Kyra and Elsa
Can't wait to see what books are chosen for next year!
After thirty questions and ten tie breaker questions, Division 9 became the winner for our school this year. On April 21, they competed via zoom to represent us in the Delta Challenge.
The team had a great time! Congratulations go to South Park's team; they will continue on to represent Delta at the next challenge.
Congratulations to all our participants - you worked hard and made us proud. Way to go, Cougars!
What a fun way to show off some of the new books that were added to our library in the spring of 2020.
Can you find any books that I have read to your class?
Can you find books that you have already read or you want to read?
If you find any books that you want to read, send me a note or email so I can put you on the hold list.
Many thanks to Mrs. Fiona Fraser for graciously allowing use of her website ideas and supporting the learning for this website to be created.
