French Immersion at Burnsview is a language-learning program where students receive instruction in French for a significant portion of the day.
From Grades 8 to 10, French Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science are all taught as part of an immersive French experience. By Grade 11, as students begin to choose specialized courses such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science for Citizens or Astronomy, the sciences are taught in English.
The purpose of the program is to foster bilingualism and biliteracy by the end of Grade 12, as well as an appreciation of francophone cultures, both Canadian and international.
To encourage continued progress, students are invited to participate in the Delta DELF—a milestone assessment completed by students in Grades 8 and 10. These experiences help prepare Grade 12 students who wish to complete the DELF B2, which represents the level of French required for admission to francophone universities.
Throughout their journey, students in Burnsview’s French Immersion program are immersed in francophone cultural experiences such as the Grade 8 Quebec Trip, the Concours d’art oratoire, and a variety of cultural events. Students emerge with a greater sense of linguistic security as well as the ability to make themselves heard publicly - in English and French!
Tous sont les bienvenus !
