Getting Started with Literacy - Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing
In Kindergarten, at Brooke, our teachers use many different resources to get students engaging in literacy. To avoid "summer slide" where an extended holiday from learning can have students lose some new skills you could continue practicing with your child at home.
Letter Sounds and Names
In Kindergarten, we start with a focus on identifying letters by practicing their SOUNDS first, then the NAMES of the letters.
Students will first learn the sounds and names of the letters in their names, then they learn other letters and sounds. Here are some programs we use that you could continue to share, and practice with your child.
"Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing. It starts with learning the letter sounds of English. Children then learn how to ‘blend’ these letter sounds together to read a word, so that d-o-g becomes the spoken ‘dog’. They then learn how to ’segment’ a word into its sounds, so that the spoken ‘dog’ is heard as d-o-g. This is necessary for writing. To put the learning into practice, suitable ‘decodable’ reading books are used." From: https://jollylearning.com/our-programmes/jolly-phonics
