How many books can I take out at a time?
Let’s talk about limits…lending limits…if you’d like to have more than these - let’s talk. Remember that you can exchange books every day before and after school.
The library is open from 8:40-9:00 and 3:00 - 3:20p.m. every day (except Friday afternoons) with adult supervision.
Grades Kindergarten and One: 1 - 2 books
Grades Two through Seven: 2 - 5 books
When can I take out books?
Every class will have one or two days during the week when they come to the library for instruction. During this time students will sign out books.
Schedule:
Mondays: Divisions 3, 4, 5, 7, & 10
Tuesdays: Divisions 1, 2, & 7
Wednesdays: Divisions 4, 9, 10, 11, 12 & Bright Eyes Preschool and Daycare Programs (alternating Wednesdays)
Thursdays: Divisions 5, 6, 13, 14 & 15
Fridays: Divisions 3, 6, 7, 8 & 9
How long can I take out a book for?
How long do you need to read it? Sometimes a favourite book needs to be read many times! Typically it’s nice to have the books back after a week or two so that others can enjoy the books too. If you need a book for longer than two weeks just talk to the Teacher Librarian.
What if my book is late/overdue?
I will chat with students to remind them to return their books. Reports will not be generated for teachers, and teachers are not responsible for books that students have signed out. Notes or emails will be sent home to families to support the student to find their books.
What if I lose or damage my book?
You lost your book? Your dog ate your book? Your book got dropped in a puddle?
Life happens. Let’s talk about ways to take care of our books so that they come back to the library for other people to read, love, and enjoy. If you’ve lost a book and find it in the future (even years from now!) bring it back to the library. It always has a home here.
Will there be a charge for missing or damaged books?
No. Fines will not be charged to students or families. Books are precious and need to be cared for so that you and others can enjoy them for years to come. We will work together to find another way to get that book back on the shelves!
Can I take books home for the holidays?
Yes! The books get lonely staying on the shelves. They love to be read and enjoyed all year!
Christmas Break and Spring Break
Before Christmas and Spring Breaks students will take books out like every other week. If students want extra books all they have to do is ask.
Summer Break - we will follow the Eric Walters Summer Lending Program
In June students will be introduced to the Summer Lending Program. A family permission letter will be sent home. Students may take up to 15 books home for the summer.
Who else can use the Library at Brooke Elementary?
We invite families and preschoolers to visit the library. Everyone is welcome!
Books are precious. They can transport us to other places and times and can bring us together to read and enjoy. We need to take care of them so that many others can enjoy them for years to come. Here are some tips and tricks to help you take great care of our books so that we can all enjoy them!
Library books don’t like water! Keep them away from the bath, puddles, and anything wet.
Library books don’t like sticky fingers! Read with clean hands and save snacking and sipping for book breaks instead of while you’re reading.
Library books love to be shared! Instead of sharing with a friend bring them back to the library for your friend to check them out.
Library books don’t like bent pages! Use a book mark and close your book instead of laying it face down.
Put your library day(s) on your calendar at home. The night before make sure your library books are in your book bag or backpack and ready to go back to school the next day!
If your library book gets damaged bring it back to the library. Librarians are expert book-fixers.
