february 2025

New DATE FOR MATH TEST:  February 27th @ 9:15. I'll review the HW packet with the class on February 20th, and we'll continue review on February 26th.

Gr. 4:  Compare decimals (greater than, less than), order fractions with common denominators, write decimals in fraction form

Gr. 5: Equivalent fractions, rounding decimals to tenth or hundredth, comparing decimals and fractions (converting between them)

Dates:

• LUNAR NEW YEAR ends on February 8th.

• Britannia Shipyard Field trip is in the morning on Friday, February 14th

• NO SCHOOL:  Family Day is Monday, February 17th, and there is a Pro-D Day on Friday, February 21st

• Hot lunches are on Thursdays,  February 13th and 27th

• Guitar Club is at recess on Wednesdays

• Drawing Club is at lunch recess on Thursdays

• Reading Link Challenge is ON, and the quiz date is Friday, April 11th at 10:30am!

Current Projects:

Units of Inquiry - How the World Works (Simple Machines)

• We've built machines and information about our summative task (research, build, present) is posted under Unit Two in the drop-down menu

• We shared our elevators, drawbridges and catapults with our Division 8 buddies! 

• Refer to the Engineering Design Process link under Unit Two for information about the method we followed

Who We Are (People live storied lives)

• We are reflecting on our Family Tree information and writing paragraphs (following the WRITING PROCESS - Pre-write, draft, revise, edit, publish) to explain what we did, what was rewarding, what piqued our curiosity

• We'll be coming back to our sources to find stories or anecdotes to write and share with the class next term

Math 

• multiplication facts (times tables)

• multiplication of multiple digits (eg. 219 x 4)

• division of 2 digit by 1 digit - with remainders (eg. 45➗8)

• place value - we will soon be using this to practice the AREA model for multiplication (check the math drop down menu)

• factors, multiples

• using SPECIFIC vocabulary (factor, product, multiple, equation, etc.)

Dates:

• Monday, November 25th will be a non-instructional day. Teachers have school. Kids don't!

• Friday, November 29th we will walk to SDSS at noon to watch the DYT production of Oliver Jr! Lunch will be at 11:40

• DELTASSIST FOOD DRIVE is on until our holiday concert on December 12th

• Holiday Concert is December 12th @ 6:30pm

October/november

Current Projects:

Now that we've gotten into the swing of things we are digging into our units of inquiry.  Updated information will be posted on the drop down HOME menu, where you will find IB Learning (it has SUBPAGES!!!).

Important Activities:

1. What is a machine?

2. STEM opportunities to build some simple machines

3. Art Fundraiser - Students decided to make watercolour fall tree designs

4. Family Background - Do you speak a different language? Can you find out how to say "hello" or "welcome" in a language special to your family? Share it at school, and we will add these greetings to our classroom!

Dates:

• Friday, October 25th is Pro D Day - NO SCHOOL!

• MONSTER DASH with our buddy class (Div. 8/Ms. Cvekic) October 29th, 1:40 pm (wear appropriate clothing and footwear!)

• Halloween Parade is in the afternoon on October 31st!

• Pumpkin Story Walk is outside on October 31st

• Diwali begins on October 31st!

• October 31st, Nathan Wilson will be visiting to discuss Indigenous Veteran's Day 

• November 1st is the PAC PJ Day and Glow Dance Party (5-8pm)

September/October

Activities:

The early part of the year is spent getting to know each other and establishing expectations.

Important Activities:

1. Creating an Essential Agreement for Division 4

2. Student Timeline Activity:  Students are creating personal timelines as part of our first unit of inquiry (See IB Learning Drop down menu)

Events are organized in a linear fashion that, combined with visual representation, allows students to express their ideas. The timelines will allow us to make connectinos with the various people we study this year

3. Student Family Tree: Students are creating a family tree that features the people they are connected to, biologically or otherwise, and how they are connected

Goals:

3. 1. • find a source (parent, grandparent, etc.) who can help you piece together your background - record this information for use in an art piece

      • think about a way of organizing your information. It could be a basic family tree with you at the bottom, and branches that lead to your parents, grandparents, etc., or, it may include additional members and connections. You get to do the organization in a way that works for you. Present the information "artistically" (to be completed in class) 

      • eventually we will share stories from the people on our tree

• Tuesday, December 17th is the PANCAKE BREAKFAST!  Come and see Mrs. Jorgensen at 8am for a stack and some coffee :)
