100 Meter: The shortest race. One length of the straight part of the track
100/110 Hurdles: Hurdles set up on the 100 straight part of the track. These hurdles are set up close together on runners quickly step 3, 4, or 5 times in between each hurdle.
200 Meter: The second shortest race. One curve + one straight part of the track
200 Hurdles: Hurdles set up on the 200 section of the track. These hurdles are more spread out and athletes run in between them.
400 Meter: The longest sprint. One lap around the track
800 Meter: The shortest long distance run. Two laps around the track
1600 Meter: The longest race. Four laps around the track (1 mile)
Each relay has 4 runners + 1 baton that is handed off to each runner so they may begin their section of the race.
4x100: Each athlete runs 100 meters equaling one lap around the track
4x200: Each athlete runs 200 meters equaling 2 laps around the track
4x400: Each athlete runs 400 meters equaling 4 laps around the track
4x800: Each athlete runs 800 metes equaling 8 laps around the track
Shot Put: Athletes throw or "put" a heavy spherical ball as far as possible using different techniques. You can not step outside of the circle.
Discus: Athletes throw a heavy disc as far as they can for distance
Long Jump: Athletes run on a runway toward a sand pit and must jump from a jump off line. The goal is to jump as far as possible. Whatever mark is left in the sand closest to the jump off line is what is measured.
High Jump: Athletes must jump over a bar that is set at different heights without making it fall. Athletes usually run in a curved line and bound toward the bar and jump from one foot.
