About Sustainability

The Sustainability Class examines our relationship with the Earth. Students in this class are interested in their role in the environment. Our class is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of a 10,000-gallon aquaponics system where we raise tilapia and grow a variety of vegetables. Students gain an appreciation and a connection to where their food originates and is produced.

Students are also active in the Colorado River Watch Citizen Science organization monitoring our community’s water along the Rio Grande. Additionally, our class partners with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Natural Resources Conservation Service to complete snow pack studies, learn about our soils, and preserving heritage sites within the Rio Grande National Forest.

Students have been so motivated by their experiences that they are seeking action to have a greener school. By learning about our natural resources, students participate in activities that seek to maintain an ecological balance. One of the main focuses for the class is to expose students to many career fields in science. Students have many opportunities to work with professionals in the community who generously donate their time to exposing students to their field. Students are asked to take part in activities that ask them to be problem solvers, inventors, artists, and more.
