In grades K–5, our teachers use the Texas Wonders curriculum to deliver high-quality instruction in reading, language arts (RLA), and phonics. This comprehensive program is aligned with Texas standards and supports all learners through a balance of whole group, small group, and independent activities. Students develop strong foundational skills in phonics and word recognition, while also building vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing abilities. Through engaging stories, nonfiction texts, and purposeful lessons, Texas Wonders helps students grow into confident, capable readers and communicators.
All Reading/Language Arts teachers in grades K-3 have successfully completed the Texas Reading Academies.
What are the Texas Reading Academies?
The Texas Reading Academies are a state-led initiative to ensure all K–3 teachers and administrators are equipped with the latest, research-based strategies to teach reading effectively. Through this professional development, educators deepen their understanding of how children learn to read, including phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The goal is to help every student become a strong, confident reader by building a strong foundation in the early grades.
In grades 6–8, our English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) instruction is guided by Texas StudySync from McGraw-Hill. This curriculum is designed to meet Texas standards while engaging students with a diverse mix of classic and contemporary texts. Through reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, students build critical thinking skills, expand vocabulary, and learn to analyze and respond to a variety of literature and informational texts. With interactive digital tools and collaborative learning opportunities, StudySync helps prepare students for high school success and lifelong literacy.
During the 2025-2026 school year DeKalb ISD will have a committee that will be reviewing RLA materials for adoption and implementation in the 2026-2027 school year. For more information on the planning and review process please contact Emily Lee, 903-667-2566x1001.
