The Varsity Blues are a select, small ensemble that performs a variety of vocal music not done in your typical “school day” choir. Members of the ensemble need to be highly skilled at blending within difficult harmonies, sight-reading and singing independently on their own part. The students selected must also have the willingness to work with visual elements of performance including choreography and dance.
The ensemble will be made up of NO MORE THAN 16 voices selected for balanced parts and blend. Students who audition can audition and/or be considered for more than one part but will only be placed into one section.
To be a part of the ensemble a student must audition DURING the selected audition time(s). If a student cannot make the audition time, they cannot be considered for the ensemble. This is because of the multi-faceted audition process. Students selected for the group must also be a part of one of the large ensemble choirs at DHS. Students selected must be available for weekday rehearsals (to be determined) AND an after school/evening rehearsal once a week (to be decided).
FOR AUDITIONS MAKE SURE YOU DRESS AND ACT THE PART. STUDENTS ARE NOT SELECTED ON ABILITY ALONE BUT ON THEIR ATTITUDE AND ABILITY TO WORK WITHIN AN ENSEMBLE.
**PLEASE NOTE: Students wishing to be a part of Varsity Blues cannot be a Camp Storer Counselor for 5th Grade**. (This camp takes place the week before the fall concert and would be detrimental to the ensemble in getting prepared for a concert).
Prepared solo singing – auditionees will select a song from the list below and be prepared to sing it alone and without accompaniment. You must sing it in the key specified (the first note is the key, the second note is the starting pitch). You will not be asked to sing the entire song but should learn the equivalent of 1 verse and 1 refrain.
Prepared group singing – ALL auditionees will be asked to perform a piece of 4-part (SATB) music that should be prepared in advance of auditions. Students should prepare the part they want to be considered for in the ensemble. Students may audition for multiple parts if they would like but will be selected for only one. The 4-part examples will be available in the choir room. The director will have scheduled workshops and practice tracks available.
