The A Cappella Choir, Women's Chorus and Men's Chorus have all been having classes every day during the school day. We have been adhering to the guidelines for masking, sanitizing and social distancing as best our circumstances will allow. Our regular Fall Concert and Christmas Concert were cancelled because of the pandemic situation and public health & safety concerns. The students of the choral department have continued to work on their skills as musicians and singers. We have been focusing on building teams and becoming all-around musicians as well as spending time developing our vocal music skills (which is a challenge while being masked).
The Ohio Music Education Association normally holds their District Solo & Ensemble Contest events during the early winter months. Our students prepare solos and small ensembles and journey to a host school to perform live in front of adjudicators and audiences. However, this year, the event was changed to a virtual event. ALL students participating in one of the choral music ensembles participated in a small ensemble. Those ensembles were recorded and submitted to be adjudicated virtually. It's not the same as the live experience but one benefit is we are able to showcase the work of our students here.

The ensembles of the DHS Choral Music Department have been working in class on literature to help them gain confidence in their abilities and develop their ensemble sound. Below are examples that were recorded in class on the last day of the quarter.
"Gentle Annie" - Stephen Foster/Andrew Parr, arr.
This song has incredible historical context as it is one of the most popular American folk songs of the 19th century. Stephen Foster was a very famous American songwriter.
"Take Me Home, Country Roads" - John Denver/Roger Emerson, arr.
It may talk about West Virginia but this song somehow has everyone relating to the desire to head back to familiar surroundings. The Men's Chorus loved singing this song.
"Where the Wind Goes" - Greg Gilpin
This song uses a simple question to explore the questions of meaning that we all have, especially in our youth.
Sometimes you just have to sing a happy song. It doesn't have to be complicated. Just sing.
"Come to the Water" - John Foley, S.J.
A beautiful invitation. Even though this is known as a religious piece of music, it's universal theme of offering help to anyone that needs it can be felt in it's beautiful chords and soft, flowing melody.
"Song of the Sea" - Raymond Hannisian
A personal favorite of Mr. West's, this song is about longing for lost time and the desire to go back to the days when things were simpler and full of adventure.
"Soon and Very Soon" - Andre Crouch/Jack Schrader, arr.
Just a good, old-fashioned spiritual.
