All National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college sports are divided into three categories, Division I, II, and III, which range from most to least competitive. In order to play Division I or II sports in the freshman year of college, a student must first become academically eligible with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Academic eligibility is determined by a student’s NCAA Approved Core Course high school grade point average which is on a 4.0 scale. For Division III, there are no academic eligibility requirements to play sports besides gaining acceptance into the college.
