Here is my first attempt. Go ahead, click around on it!
Mr. P's virtual classroom
What I learned:
IT IS SO FUN!
I could spend all day playing around with this! It was really fun to arrange the elements and make it look interesting and engaging.
I added some fun features too - try clicking on the portrait and the cat! (What others can you find?)
KEEP IT SIMPLE
I was initially tempted to cram as much as I could into it - and it looked terrible and not very user-friendly. It is meant to be used by my students and this is what made me pull back from added too much.
WHERE I FOUND IMAGES
To model good digital citizenship for students,
I used the EXPLORE button in Google Slides to find most of the images. (Logos are hard to find that way)
Click on an item and click "Format Options" scroll to "Drop Shadows" to give everything a 3D look. Mark the settings you use for ANGLE, DISTANCE, BLUR RADIUS and make sure you match it to all elements for consistency.
LAYERING
You can put elements on top of, or below each other.
💡Click and item and use [Command]+[↑] to move the item forward (on top) and [Command]+[↓] to move the item backwards (underneath).
LINKS
Any image can be a link, so you can do quite a bit in this space!
BE AWARE: If images overlap, it may be hard for users to click the link. Crop the image as close as possible to help with this (double click the image and drag the black dotted lines to crop).
VIDEO
One thing I do often, is embed instructional videos in Google Slides. They play within the slide!
This means you can embed videos - that you made or found - into your Bitmoji Classroom!
Next Steps . . .
Why do this?
To spend all this time creating a Bitmoji Classroom (and it did take up a good amount of time) the question has to be asked:
Is it worth it? What is the purpose? How would I use this with kids?
At first it seems like a lot of work for little payoff, but, I can see potential here.
The initial work does make subsequent 'classrooms' easier to make - the process becomes streamlined. I imagine a slideshow of 'props': tables and icons and other items that can be easily added and removed from 'live' classes.
Other 'classrooms' all linked together. This initial attempt will get turned into a more general "Welcome" page with links to other Bitmoji Classrooms (other slides) that contain more specific resources - reading, writing, speaking, etc. Now that I have a template to use, it would be easy to build one for a specific assignment/project.
MORE THAN ONE
STUDENT CREATED
I think it would be very cool for kids to create their one Bitmoji Classroom. What an interesting and engaging way for them to demonstrate and share what they've learned!
