The blue highlighting tells the student that there is something wrong that needs fixing, whether it is spelling, capitalization, punctuation, or some other issue. This makes the student think critically about the writing and problem solve. Using the 'paint formatting' tool, this is a very quick way to identify areas of concern.

By creating text shortcuts with the Automatic substitution tool, those comments you type out over and over are reduced to a couple keystrokes.

I do my best to refrain from making 'suggesting' that fix the issue because I want them to think critically about the writing process. So instead of adding a comma, I embed a comment that tells them they are missing punctuation.
