I live in South Portland, ME with my wife, daughter, two cats, and dog. My family is everything to me. Being a husband and a dad are my absolute favorite things.
I've waited tables, been a restaurant manager, supported kids in a group home setting, provided 1:1 in-home support as a Behavioral Specialist to a child, became a teaching intern, served as a long-term sub, and, FINALLY, a classroom teacher. I taught 8th grade ELA for six years, 9th grade ELA for four years, and I currently teach 6th-7th ELA where I loop with the students.
In 2013, I was invited to be part of the nErDcampNNE planning committee - an awesome educator-centered literacy-based unconference. We've been putting on conferences ever since!
Throughout all of these experiences I have always been a student - even after I graduated and no longer held that title officially. I mean, learning is the best!
Guiding a group of students through their educational journey is an awesome responsibility, one that I am so grateful to have. The mindset that I a am learner, contributes so much to my success with students.
Stagnation is the biggest enemy of the teacher. Learning and growing and improving alongside the students demonstrates authenticity and vulnerability. These actions and attitudes are foundational to building the relationships that make learning possible.

We are a looping team of four staff. We meet every day to discuss student needs and collaborate to create authentic learning Expeditions for our students.
I'm the Team Captain for our group. I make the agenda with input from the team, facilitate the meetings, and serve in the role of advocate for the team and students.
I serve on the Staff Leadership team which helps admin shape PD, building structures and systems, and is a sounding board for building-wide initiatives.

9/14 – 8/18
I taught Reading Workshop classes and all three levels of English classes offered to students.
We were a 9th grade team that worked together very closely to support the transition into High School and provide cross-curricular experiences for students.
Teacher
High School Creative Writing Coach; University of New Hampshire

The UNH Writer's Academy is a fantastic experience (and the kids like it too!). A small group of high school writers who have chosen to spend a week of their summer on the campus of UNH writing, and collaborating, and meeting authors. The goal is to write, to leave at the end of the week with at least some pieces started. I provide students with prompts and feedback and the opportunity to write and share with like-minded peers. Read more about the program here.
8th grade English; Shapleigh Middle School, Kittery, ME
8/08 – 6/14
I was part of the 8th grade team (yes, THE 8th grade team - it's a very small district!).
At my urging, the 8th grade team, Principal, and Curriculum Coordinator attended a two day seminar at King Middle school to learn and observe Expeditionary Learning. My time as an intern at King convinced me of the positive impact the ELOB model can have on students, and staff. The 8th grade team pioneered this movement with their first Expedition (modeled after one we saw at King) in February of 2011.
I served on the Staff Council (the building leadership team).
I was a member of the Technology Leadership team, both at the building and district level.
I provided professional development during the school year and summer on Google Apps for Education, Infinite Campus, and SmartBoard as well as other technology needs as identified by the staff.
