Women have been undervalued and discriminated against since they entered the sports industry. In terms of pay difference, when the German men’s football team won the world cup, they earned 44 times more than the Japanese women's team when they won the world cup. Additionally, the highest-earning female earns 220 times less than the highest-earning male in UK football. Because of the discrimination that women received from the beginning, the sports industry was essentially monopolized by men, and the results of this are still shown today. Of the 52 sports federations, women are excluded from 20 and have little representation in many. One proposed solution is to increase the media coverage of women's sports, in order to provide the audience with an equal choice (Moawad 28-53).
