Industrial Arts is a .50 credit (two hexter) CTE maker-space studio experience designed to broaden the students concept of material possibilities, prototyping, invention, and creative problem-solving. Through safety training, in-class exploration activities, guest speakers, and site visits, students will learn about career pathways and training opportunities in Portland’s robust manufacturing sector. Also, students will discuss and practice key skills critical to success in the workplace. Throughout this course, students will gain technical skills operating manufacturing machinery and have hands-on experience designing and building from raw materials. Activities will include electronics, CAD, 3-D printing, laser engraving, metal fabrication, robotics, CNC machining, graphic design and skateboard manufacturing.
Industrial Arts 1 Projects - Intro to Manufacturing Cycle/ Fabrication (creating an electric toy Solar Cells/DC motors/CNC Machining), Electronics (wiring LEDs and Laser Engraving), Intro to CAD (3D Printing), Coding (microbits) Robotics/Build your own Video Game Controller.
Industrial Arts 2 Projects- Woods Manufacturing (building a skateboard from scratch) Practical application of Micro:bits, Welding Basics with VR technology, Site Visits/Career Exploration
Students will have the opportunity to meet and interview professionals in the career field that they are interested in. Guest speakers will be invited to come into the classroom and talk to students about their chosen career and what led them on that path. Students will also be able to go on site visits (virtually for now) to tour industry specific sites.
Any student who completes and passes the Industrial Arts program with a C or better will be eligible to work with Impact NW after high school for paid interships in their selected career path. Imapct NW will work with students to obtain needed certificates, on the job experience and will help to eliminate any barriers that may impact a students ability to connect to a trade career that they are interested in.
