STEML GOOGLE SITE: SLIDE DECKS & ENG JOURNALS
STEML GOOGLE SITE: https://sites.google.com/ddsb.ca/stemelportfolios/stem-week/june-2024-wonder-land
All slide decks, engineering design journals and other relevant information for educators to participate in this challenge will be posted on the google site. We will not be using a Google Classroom this year. For simplicity, any DDSB educator with the link to the google site above will be able to access all the materials & info.
The main slide decks will house all the content and information needed to run the project successfully with your classes. The idea is that educators will project-on-the-screen and go, except for the first few slides which are dedicated to teacher background info and understanding for the project.
There is an accompanying Engineering Design Journal that goes along with the Challenge so that students can track their progress and reflect on their learning. We encourage you to print these off for younger students and use digital versions for older students.
We will also be creating an FAQ page on the google site – please check this for answers to common questions we might not have addressed yet!
All slide decks & Eng journals will be uploaded to this STEML Website so that they are easily accessible for all teachers. There will not be a google classroom. All content materials will be posted HERE.
COLLECTING RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
Google Doc: Recyclable + Classroom Materials List
Most materials are provided in the STEM kits, but a list of regular classroom items has been attached to compliment that materials we are providing.
Please encourage students to bring recycled materials from home as well (see list linked above).
Toilet paper/paper towel cardboard rolls is a MUST for the PRIMARY (K-3) challenge only. Start collecting as many of them as you can! Anything that has a cylindrical tube-like shape would be super helpful.

JUNIOR 4-5Â (ENGLISH)
Junior Challenge has 7 files below:
The Slide Deck - which goes through all of the activities
The Engineering Design Journal (EDJ) for all of the activities (top left file)
EDJs (1-pagers) for Activities 2,4 and 6
A massive EDJ for Activity 5
A second EDJ for Activity 6
Please make a copy of ALL of the files so that you are able to edit them if desired. Instructions for when to use the files are also in the teacher's notes slides for each activity.
Â
It is likely this challenge will take 10+ hours to complete the 7 Activities, so feel free to compress or expand based on your student's interest and needs. There is no pressure to adhere to any type of timelines.
IMPORTANT PREP NOTE for Junior Teachers:
Each school received a pair of wire cutters, to be shared amongst the junior classes.
Please note that these wire cutters should ONLY BE USED BY THE TEACHER, NOT students.
Junior teachers will need to do some prep with the wooden dowels in their STEM Kit materials BEFORE beginning the activities with their class.
Teacher will need to use the inside of the wire cutters to cut the wooden dowels into shorter 5 cm length pieces.
Every group of four students, will need 9 of the 5cm length pieces of dowel (4 to stand up the base plates and 5 for the gears).

INTERMEDIATE 6-8Â (ENGLISH)
Teacher notes for each activity can be found in the first slides of each deck.
Be mindful of safety considerations while working with electrical items!
Please make a copy of the files, as the posted files are "viewer" only to ensure nothing is accidently changed. You can then edit your copy to fit the needs of your classroom.
IMPORTANT PREP NOTE for Intermediate Teachers:
Teachers can prepare the long strips of red and black wires!
Each intermediate kit will have 8m long segments of red and black wire that need to be cut up into 1m segments. Regular scissors will do the trick!
Each group will receive 1m of red and 1m of black wire.Â
Due to keeping costs down, we did not add in wire cutters/strippers. When students are looking to strip their wires, they are able to use scissors to score off the ends of their wires. There are some picture examples and instructions in the intermediate slide deck of how to do this.
