Inside the Welcome to Kindergarten bag, you will find materials for your child for Kindergarten. The contents inside the bag are:
books
magnetic alphabet letters
crayons, and a pencil
glue stick and scissors
inflatable ball
resource books and pamphlets
It is important to read to your child each day as it will help build their literacy skills. When introducing your child to books it's important to teach them pre-reading behaviours:
Book orientation
-how to hold and care for a book
-is the spine on the left
-we open the book 1 page at a time from front to back
-we read left to right
- alphabet letters make words
When reading to your child, ask them:
Can you find the authors name, title, and illustrator?
What do you see in the pictures?
What do you think this book is about? What do you think might happen?
Can you recall or retell the events in this story?
Ask your child sing the alphabet song and point to the letters as they sing.
When you point to a letter ask your child what letter it is, what sound does it make and words that begin with that letter.
Have your child practice making their name and words with the magnets.
Match letters with other letters around the house
Teach your child the proper way to hold and carry scissors.
Practice cutting different lines: wavy, curved, straight, and zig zag.
Check to see that they are guiding the paper with their other hand.
Have your child practice holding a pencil and crayon using proper grip (as shown in the picture).
Practice coloring in pictures or creating pictures. Remind them to stay inside the lines when coloring.
Practice writing words and numbers they see around their home
Practice throwing, catching , trapping and kicking the ball
Play fun games such as counting how many times you can catch the ball
Put on some music and dance with the ball
Practice playing with the ball at different heights: low, middle and high in the air
Practice moving the ball to different spaces (above/over, under, beside, in front, behind)
