Writing at the Beginning of the Year

We start working on writing early in the year (the first day of school) by incorporating the sight words (color words, I, can, see, a, etc.) that we learn the first week of school. We work on sounding out words so that the students become independent writers.

Example: Your child might want to write "I see a red apple." The sentence that your child writes might look like this: I see a red apl. That is perfectly normal!

*** All student work was done independently. The writing on the paper in marker/pen is written by the teacher once the student is finished. The teacher writing is included so it is easier for others to read what the child/children wrote. ***

*Narrative Writing -- sounding out words, labeling, using transition words, and narrative elements (character, setting, problem, and solution).*

**Many of the pictures below were taken during the 20-21 school year - Hybrid teaching (some students were at home and some students were at school). All photos and videos were taken with permission from parents.**

We use sight word cards and the sight word wall to write sentences using the sight words we have learned.

We learn to use transition words to help us put our narrative stories in order. Transition words: first, next, then, last.

We use a four square graphic organizer to help us write our narrative stories using transition words.

We continue using the sight word wall and our sounding out skills to write independently.

We are always working on using correct spacing, handwriting, sounding out, capitalization, and punctuation. We LOVE to write!

*Narrative Writing*

We use our skills to write independently. This is an example of a student's writing about Thanksgiving.

Our goal is to write independently by the end of September. This is an example of a student's narrative story written in November.

Students work hard to include details in their story. This is an example of a student's story written in Nov./December.

Students work hard to use descriptive words in their stories. We continue using the sight word wall and our skills to sound out difficult words.

*Opinion Writing -- tell your opinion - what YOU believe/think and tell the reasons why you believe/think that certain way.*

*Narrative Writing -- creative, dialogue, and reading with expression according to punctuation used within writing.

We learn how to write opinion pieces. We use graphic organizers to help us fill in all of our reasons.

She wrote an opinion piece about her favorite superhero power. She loved Elasti-Girl and Violet. Great job with punctuation!
