The Lithia Springs High School STEM Magnet Program seeks students who demonstrate curiosity, an interest in STEM, and a willingness to engage in challenging, collaborative learning. Selection considers students’ readiness for the program and their potential to grow as problem solvers across the Biomedical, Engineering, and Computer Science/Cybersecurity pathways.
The application and interview process provides opportunities for students to explain their interests, describe how they approach challenges, and demonstrate their commitment to the program. Selection should consider multiple sources of evidence rather than rely on a single academic measure.
What Is Considered
Interest in STEM
Curiosity about science, technology, engineering, or mathematics and an interest in applying learning to real-world problems.
Academic Readiness
Evidence that the student is prepared to participate in rigorous coursework, along with consideration of growth, effort, and available support.
Critical Thinking and Creativity
The ability to ask questions, consider alternatives, explain reasoning, and approach unfamiliar problems.
Communication and Collaboration
Willingness to share ideas, listen to others, contribute to a team, and assume meaningful responsibilities.
Persistence and Growth
Willingness to respond to feedback, revise work, seek assistance, and continue when an initial approach is unsuccessful.
Commitment to Program Expectations
Understanding of and willingness to participate in interdisciplinary PBLs, STEM journals, annual Science/STEM Fair projects, academic competitions, community service, an internship, an electronic portfolio, and senior capstone.
Equitable Selection and Access
The selection process recognizes that students enter with different experiences and opportunities. Prior participation in robotics, coding, enrichment programs, or other STEM activities can demonstrate interest, but students should also have opportunities to show potential through everyday problem-solving, personal interests, and interview responses. Consistent application review and interview criteria help support fair consideration.
