Referral Process

Vision Screening is the rapid process of selecting those students who show possible vision problems. Vision screening should be used to discriminate visual problems that may possibly interfere with the learning process. Following a vision screening, a student may need to be referred to an eye care specialist. School nurses and trained volunteers give vision screenings as part of their periodic health screenings. More information can be found on the CDE website.

A Functional Vision Evaluation is administered after the process of vision screening has revealed a possible visual problem that may interfere with learning AND after the student has been seen by an eye doctor (optometrist or ophthalmologist). The Functional Vision Evaluation determines the quantity and quality of vision that the student functionally uses in normal daily activities. From this information, intervention strategies and techniques can be planned to assist the student in accessing their curriculum.
