Department of Students with Visual Impairment including Blindness

Our Mission: The Department for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired provides appropriate services and resources, which empower students to access the general curriculum and promote personal independence.

Children and youth with visual impairment, including blindness in Douglas County School District have access to a range of services for their education and social support. The majority of students with visual impairment, including blindness attend their home school through the itinerant model. DCSD has 7 teachers of students with visual impairment (TVI) and 3 certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists. These individuals work with other educational team members to ensure that the students with visual impairment, including blindness have access to the general education curriculum and the related services that are identified on their Individualized Education Programs. Some families decide to open enroll to neighboring DCSD schools, and a few DCSD students are served at the Colorado School for the Blind, which is located on the campus of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind in Colorado Springs.
