What you will see in the Library?

Once a week, classes come to the Library for Read Aloud and a chance to check out two books. Being a smaller school, I have learned what each students' interest are and reading level. To promote reading, students share the books they have chosen and why. Also, there are Student made Book Tags on the shelves.

The library is organized in a way to allow students find books of similar interest. Fiction books are organized by genre: Animal Stories, Adventure, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Humor, Scary Stories, Science Fiction and Graphic Novels.

Kindergartners check out one book and keep it in the classroom to learn about being responsible for library books and to return them each week. After Fall Break, they get to start taking them home.

1st - 6th graders are able to check out up to 2 books. The older students get, the longer it takes to finish reading a novel. They are allowed to Renew their book as long as there's no Hold on it.

Damaged Books

Books get damaged all the time. They may get chewed on by a pet or even a younger sibling who is teething. Some books get damaged from a leaky water bottle in a backpack. If a book is needing to be replaced, please send the book back to school if you can. A $10.00 replacement fee will be added to your child's account. Please do not purchase a book as a replacement. Libraries have strict rules as to how they are bound.

Non-Fiction books

Non-Fiction books are continuously updated to ensure reliable information and to be aligned with curriculum.

What Technology is taught at Sedalia?

Sedalia Elementary is a 1:1 device school. That means each student has access to either an iPad or Chromebook. K-2 use iPads while 2-6 use Chromebooks. 2nd grade is a transitional grade from iPads to Chromebooks.

Typing

Students use Typing Pal as the our primary tol for learning keyboarding skills. The main focus is to get students comfortable to type while keeping fingers on the Home Row and having their eyes on the screen. Once students are typing words and sentences, they like to compete using Nitro Type.

Coding

Starting in Kindergarten, students are introduced to basic coding, called Blockly. The primary site we use is Code.org. Coding is an engaging way for students to learn problem solving, patterns and creativity.

Google Suite

Students learn to use Docs, Slides, and Sheets throughout the years at Sedalia. We want our students to be prepared for the rigors of middle school.

Robotics

Here at Sedalia, we have Bee-bots and Dash Robots. These are used in conjunction with coding. Robotics is a great way to apply the skills learned from Coding to programming the robots.

Bee-bots are for primary grades while Dash Robots are accessible for 2nd- 6th grades.
