As always, the best thing any student can do is to READ, READ, and READ some more!!! We encourage reading for enjoyment when at home to develop reading and comprehension skills. This can even include reading along to an audiobook, graphic novels, or something as simple as turning on Closed Captioning for movies and shows.
Students who are selected for RISE will be given additional literacy work to do when at home that will help build upon the skills that are taught at school. Reading a passage they have been given over and over again will help improve fluency and reading for meaning and many times will not take much more than a few minutes of their time with invaluable results!
When needed students will also be given lists of sight words that should be automatic and quickly read at each grade level. Creating flashcards, playing sight word games or reading down a column each day will help improve fluency. Many of these words do not follow standard phonic rules and simply need to be memorized.
