Energy Bus
Bear Canyon is proud to be an Energy Bus Certified school practicing The Energy Bus for Schools Leadership Journey.
Our mission is to inspire and develop leaders (students and educators) who positively impact schools, families, communities and the world!
The Energy Bus for Schools Leadership Journey is a multi-year approach to creating and sustaining a positive school culture through shared leadership. Shared leadership takes into account that every person in the school community is a leader, even students as young as 4 and 5 years of age. We define leadership as the ability to take personal responsibility for your actions and stopping to think about outcomes prior to reacting to challenging situations. We believe that engaging our students in these valuable principles early in life will support their social, emotional, and academic goals. This program works hand in hand with Restorative Practices for discipline as both programs support personal ownership and lifelong relational skills building.
The Energy Bus Positive Framework for students is based on the following seven principles:
You’re the Driver
Create a Positive Vision
Drive with Purpose
Fuel your Ride with Positive Energy
Transform Negativity
Love your Passengers
Enjoy the Ride
We have tons of fun celebrating our students who exhibit positive traits at assemblies and throughout the school day
Reading
At Bear Canyon, we use the McGraw Hills Wonders Reading Curriculum. Wonders is an evidence-based K-5 English Language Arts curriculum that encourages students to be active in their learning and exploration. Students will have opportunities to express themselves and reflect on their learning through reading, writing, and speaking. We also use UFLI Phonics to supplement our Wonders Reading Curriculum.
In second grade, students will focus on building strong reading skills that align with the Colorado Academic Standards. By the end of the year, students will be able to independently read and comprehend a range of texts. They will engage in activities to improve fluency, accuracy, and understanding of different literary genres. Students will expand their vocabulary, make predictions, ask questions, summarize key points, and compare different texts.
You can support your child's reading progress by encouraging daily reading at home and discussing the stories with your child!
Writing
At Bear Canyon, we use SRSD (Self-regulated Strategy Development) to support students' writing. By the end of second grade, students are expected to be able to write for different purposes and audiences, including narratives, informative/explanatory texts, and opinion pieces. They will focus on organizing their ideas cohesively, using proper grammar and punctuation, and incorporating details to support their writing. Additionally, students will practice revising and editing their work to improve clarity and coherence.
You can support your child's writing development by encouraging them to write regularly, providing feedback, and engaging in writing activities at home (letters to family, grocery lists, etc).
Math
At Bear Canyon, we use the enVision Mathematics Curriculum to guide student learning. By the end of the year, students are expected to demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 1,000, understand place value, and be able to solve word problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They will work on measuring length, telling time, interpreting data, and identifying shapes based on their attributes. Additionally, students will develop problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning.
You can support your child's math skills by practicing basic math facts, incorporating math into daily activities, and reinforcing the importance of perseverance in solving math problems.
