String Orchestra

NEWS:

• (April 2025)  CONGRATULATIONS to the Rock Canyon Orchestra program for receiving an overall "SUPERIOR" rating at the 2019 Colorado West Invitational Music Performance Festival (CWIMPF) in Grand Junction!  All three judges awarded a "I: Superior" rating (the highest possible) for our performance.

• (April 2023)  CONGRATULATIONS to the Rock Canyon String Orchestra for receiving "SUPERIOR" ratings from all adjudicators on our performance at the CHSAA Large Group Festival!

General course Info:  

- Available to 10th-12th graders and Freshmen who pass an audition

- Previous experience on an instrument is required

- Substantial time and practicing commitment required

- Challenging repertoire requiring moderate technical skill in different positions

- Private lessons outside of school strongly recommended

OFFICIAL COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Year long, 1 credit, available grades 10-12 (and 9th graders who pass an audition)

Prerequisite:  Previous experience playing a string instrument is strongly recommended. No audition is required (for 10th-12th graders).

The String Orchestra will study various styles of music from the Baroque era through the 21st Century.  Comprehensive musicianship will enhance individual performance as well as the overall integrity of the ensemble.  In addition to musicianship, the students will learn sight-reading and listening skills.  Students will create music, study music theory and relate music to other disciplines and cultures.  Private study is strongly recommended.  All performances are mandatory.  Concert attire must be purchased, and personal instruments are required unless renting a school instrument. This is a year long course.
